Timothy, Keep A Close Watch on Yourself and on the Doctrine (1 Timothy 4:16)

Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by doing so you will save both yourself and your hearers” (1 Timothy 4:16, ESV)

This last verse of chapter 4 is a very powerful reminder for us today – preachers and teachers, especially and all Christians, generally. Previously, the apostle Paul tells Timothy to “devote [himself] to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching” (v.13, bracket mine) and do “not neglect the gift” (v.14) that God has given to him. And now, Paul wants him to “keep a close watch” or “take heed(NKJV) these two things:

1) His Life, and
2) His Teaching or Doctrine

Nowadays, people are so fearful of the word ‘doctrine.’ Currently, I’m reading Charles C. Ryrie’s A Survey of Bible Doctrine, and one of my friends who saw the book asked me during our coffee hang out if I’m thinking of applying for a pastoral position. I said no and he replied, “Then why are you reading on Bible doctrine?” Once I heard a preacher said to the congregations that he just wants to share ‘practical’ lessons from the Bible and not about ‘theology’ or ‘doctrine.’ Again, during Bible Study, a student shared in the big group that she doesn’t like to study Bible doctrine because “I’m just a regular Christian, not a preacher.” You can find these examples everywhere in Christendom. To most people, the word ‘doctrine’ conjures up visions of technicality, difficulty, and dogmatism. Maybe it’s our fault – preachers and teachers – that give people bad or negative impressions about the word in the pulpit, writings, or social media.

“Far from being dry and abstract,” explains Millard J. Erickson in his well-known book Introduction to Christian Doctrine, “Christian doctrine deals with the most fundamental issues of life: who am I, what is the ultimate meaning of the universe, where am I going?” As such, good doctrine is very essential, critical, and important because it will influence how we answer these fundamental questions. Christian doctrine “deals with general or timeless truths about God and the rest of reality” added Millard. Where to get a sound, healthy and life-giving doctrine? Only in one chief place: The Holy Scripture, the perfect written Word of God. It is God’s special revelation of Himself and the reality of everything in life. Elsewhere Paul wrote: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16). What happened if we don’t “keep a close watch” on the doctrine? It may cause us and our hearers to “depart from the faith” (4:1a). Instead of devoting ourselves to reading and teaching the Scripture (4:13), we may unintentionally devote ourselves to “deceitful spirits and teachings (or doctrines) of demons” (4:1b).

But don’t forget this: “Keep a close watch on yourself” too. If Timothy only keeps a close watch on the doctrine and not himself, he is a hypocrite. And there were a lot of religious hypocrites during Paul’s time… not to mention ours’ too. Our doctrine can be God-centred, Christ-exalted, and Spirit-filled but if it doesn’t match with our actions, we are deceiving ourselves, being deceived and a stumbling block to others. Preacher’s Homiletical Commentary puts it this way: “1. Actions are more intelligible than words; 2. The language of life is more convincing than the language of the lip; 3. The teaching of the life is available in many cases in which the teaching of the lip cannot or ought not to be attempted.” So, take heed of these two things, don’t separate the two, “persist” or “continue in them(KJV), for “by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.” It’s not just about you.

Christian Beliefs: 20 Basics Every Christian Should Know (2005) by Wayne Grudem, Book Review

Christian Beliefs: 20 Basics Every Christian Should Know (2005) by Wayne Grudem

When I first saw Grudem's classic Systematic Theology (1,290 pages) in our central office library, I said to myself someday I will read it. But that day was delayed and the book is already gone. Then, I came across a condensed version of that book entitled Bible Doctrine (528 pages) in a bookstore. "When I received my salary," I promised, "I will buy it." But by the end of the month, that too has gone with the wind. Only during second-hand bookfair in Kuching that I get to get this book, Christian Beliefs (157 pages), a condensed version of the condensed version of Systematic Theology. This experience makes me believe in the doctrine of election 🤣

When I read this book, I felt like I want to skip some of the chapters because I thought I already knew much about the subjects and wanted to just focus on the unfamiliar and controversial doctrines. Thank God, He makes me realized my pride. So I determined to read the entire book anyway. I've learned and relearned so much. Do not let the brevity of each chapter fool you. The two intentional qualities that Dr. Grudem wanted to keep in this book, namely, "clarity and application to life", really what makes this book valuable. To me, he already achieves these qualities (like 90%). And although I wish he can expand more on certain subjects such as atonement, adoption, predestination, and eschatology, I understand that he can't do it all in detail in this short book (that's why I need to get Systematic Theology!). What I'm grateful for, however, are the main Bible references that I can check for myself and three application questions at the end of each chapter. Very helpful 😊👍

By the way, do not let the words like 'Biblical’, theology' and 'doctrine' intimidate you. The knowledge of God is not reserved for theologians or scholars or pastors only. Regardless of your profession or vocation, as long as you're a believer a.k.a. Christ-follower, try your best to learn at least the basics. "Knowing and understanding basic Christian beliefs is important for every Christian," assured Dr. Grudem. "People who don't know what the Bible teaches will have no ability to distinguish truth from error, and they will be like 'children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine' (Ephesians 4:14). But Christians who have a solid foundation will be more mature, will not easily be led astray, will have better judgment, and will 'have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil' (Hebrews 5:14)."

We are living in the last days. False prophets, false teachers, and antichrists are everywhere. With the help of the Holy Spirit, equip yourself. Read your Bible and learn solid Biblical teachings... Winter is coming... Be prepared... 🙏⚡📢 #ServeToLead #1Book1Week #LeadersAreReaders #WayneGrudem #ChristianBeliefs #EveryoneAreTheologians

🤔🙏⚡ #ServeToLead #InjilMatius

We Must Obey God Rather Than Men

Peter (and the other apostles) was not being disrespectful to the religious leaders when he said this 👇 In fact, in 1 Peter 2:13-17, he encourages us to submit to authority and human government "for the Lord's sake." But when their rules go against the faith, it is undoubtful that we should obey God first and foremost rather than fear and bow to men. Be a good citizen, even more, be a better Christian. Where are men with godly conviction nowadays?

Martin Luther, defending himself against German princes and Roman Catholic priests, said, "My cause shall be commended to the Lord for He lives and reigns who preserved the three children* in the furnace of the Babylonian king. If He is unwilling to preserve me, my life is a small thing compared with Christ. Expect anything of me except flight or recantation. I will not flee, much less recant. So may the Lord Jesus strengthen me." He did not say "deliver me" or "make it easy for me" He said "strengthen me" And he concluded his response with the words, "Here I stand, I can do no other. So help me God" #ServeToLead #FearGodNotMen

Bukan Kuantiti Tetapi Fokus Iman Kita (Matius 17:14-23)

Jawab Yesus, "Ini kerana kepercayaanmu tipis" (Matius 17:20). The People's Bible: The Remarkable History of the King James Version (2010) by Alec Motyer, Book Review

The People's Bible: The Remarkable History of the King James Version (2010)
by Alec Motyer

I'm introduced to the late Alec Motyer (1924-2016) through his many contributions to The Bible Speaks Today commentary series. He can write very difficult subjects in more comprehensible ways (not saying that it's going to be easy). Many people attempt to write the amazing story of the KJV but most are either too technical and academic (except for Alister McGrath's In the Beginning: The Story of the King James Bible. Although it is somewhat lengthy, you will be greatly benefitted from it more than others) or too simplistic and watered-down. This 202-pages book, however, is just right for non-academic like me who wanted to know more but not too much. Motyer highlights very crucial moments, people, and events in the history of the making of the masterpiece.

Once you read The People's Bible you will appreciate how blessed we are to have English Bibles available for us today and how much blood and sweat poured out by the people who desire for the words of God to be understood by all people; you will be glad that God moved Desiderius Erasmus' heart (somewhat good guy in a very bad church) to publish New Testament in Greek; you will praise God for the people like John Wycliffe and William Tyndale (my hero!), etc. who translated the Bible into the English language even it cost their lives; you will question God for why he uses corrupt King James I of England and religiopolitical turmoil during that time to give birth to "the Lively Oracles of God"; you will be confused either to rejoice or to sorrow over the many Bible versions available before and after the KJV was first published in 1611; you will cringe at how religious and political leaders twisted the Scripture to support their theological bent and believe; you will understand where the KJV-Only believers coming from and why they say what they say - and why it is dangerous to stick to only ONE translation or version.

I love using KJV for word study and as a reference Bible but not for reading and preaching (I use ESV or NLT). English is my third language and for ministry, I usually speak in Bahasa Malaysia. Besides, I have issues with the KJV textual variations and manuscripts, which I'm not going to explain here. Nevertheless, we must acknowledge that KJV is a remarkable achievement in its time and still one of the great literature in modern times (even William Shakespeare often borrows stories, references, and languages from the KJV and of course, the Geneva Bible).

"The King James Version has had, and continues to have a quite extraordinary history," writes Alex Motyer. "It is unique in the annals of all books, published in any language, anywhere, at any time. Its influence has been and continues to be incalculable. It has helped to shape the western mind; has influenced what we think and how we think. It has CHANGED THE WORLD. Yet, we must be careful not to lapse into idolatry for, of course, the 1611 Bible is only one vehicle carrying across the centuries and millennia a cargo of ancient wisdom, piety, and truth." Amen 💪😊🙏 #ServeToLead #1Book1Week #LeadersAreReaders #LetsMakeReadingCoolAgain #AlecMotyer #TheKingJamesVersion #ChurchHistory

For further research, I also watch YouTube documentaries Adam Nicolson: The King James Bible (Nat Geo); The King James Bible: The Book That Changed The World (2011); New World Order Bible Versions (documentary by pro-KJV); King James Controversy (talk by Dr. James White exposing the KJV-ism); and debates by James White vs. Jack Moorman and John Ankeberg Show discussing Is the King James Version the Only Perfect Version Today? - and more. So you know how serious and deep I've explored this subject 🤣

Yohanes Pembaptis Ialah Nabi Elia? dan Apa Implikasinya? (Matius 17:10-13)

Tetapi apabila Yohanes Pembaptis sendiri ditanya terus oleh wakil para penguasa agama, "Kamu ini siapa? Elia?" Dengan berterus-terang Dia menjawab, "Bukan" (Yohanes 1:21). 52 Books #1Book1Week Year 2020

In 2017, I read 72 books; in 2018, 50 books; in 2019, I forget (and lazy) to count; and in 2020, 52 books. “I’m old-fashioned," confessed Wisława Szymborska on behalf of me too, "and think that reading books is the most glorious pastime that humankind has yet devised" 📖⚡💪 #ServeToLead #LeadersAreReaders

Tujuh (7) Fakta Tentang Kemulian Yesus (Matius 17:1-9)

🙏📖😇 #ServeToLead #InjilMatius

Markus 6:45-52 Dimana Yesus Apabila Kita Hampir Tenggelam? (#InjilMarkus S.1 E.49)

🙏⚡😮 #ServeToLead #InjilMarkus

Five (5) Lessons I Learned from William Carey: Pioneer Missionary (this edition 2000) by E.A. Annett, Book Review

William Carey: Pioneer Missionary (this edition 2000) by E.A. Annett

Reading biographies of heroes of the faith like William Carey never fails to inspire me to continue to serve the Lord and stop complaining. As much I admire his accomplishments, I'm encouraged the most by his passion and perseverance amidst difficulties. If only young* people nowadays are exposed to great men and women of God of old (not perfect, of course) like Carey, William Tyndale, Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Knox, John Sung, Corrie Ten Boom, Catherine Booth, etc. and not to be soo obsessed with K-Pop idols, they will grow stronger in the faith and maturity in the mind. When today's depression causes many youngsters to self-destructive behavior, Charles H. Spurgeon, who was battling with depression until the end of his life, by the grace of God, was able to change the world of Christianity during his time and beyond. How do I know it's possible? Read Christian biographies.

Now, there are lots of things I can say about Mr. Carey and so many lessons I have learned. Let me briefly just share five (5) of them:

1) Evangelism: Winning Lost Souls for Christ. After his conversion, he grows rapidly. He studies the Scripture diligently and has a great interest ("fierce energy of love for the heathen") to reach the lost. One of his first book or booklet that he wrote to share his conviction for reaching the world outside England was entitled, An Enquiry Into the Obligation of Christians to Use Means for the Conversion of the Heathen ("heathen" is an old word for the ungodly or pagans or unbelievers). The local church wasn't ready for this, but he was very persuasive about it and see to it that God's given-dream be done.

2) Calvinism: Theology on Fire. Now, to be clear, the book doesn't mention his Calvinistic view but simply said that he was a Baptist preacher in England before he went to India. Other biographers, however, stated that he was a devout Calvinist in the matters of a systematic approach to Biblical hermeneutics. And because of his high view of God's sovereignty, he sparked the people's consciousness about their responsibility to share the Gospel to the lost, when he preached a sermon from Isaiah 54:2-3. Two great principles were recorded from this sermon: "Expect great things from God; Attempt great things for God." God alone can do it; God will enable us to do it.

3) Vision: Don't Give Up. From England to India; from a fairly good European life to poverty-stricken missionary life; from suspicious and reluctant support by the Baptist Missionary Society at home to doubtful locals of India; from unreliable partners at first to most faithful brothers (thank God!) like Joshua Marshman and William Ward. In all of these challenges and more, Carey doesn't give up. Only after 6-7 years of ministering tirelessly, then he and his friends saw the first fruits of conversion. Then, as they gain momentum, they started Serampore Mission school, college, and literature classes. When God gave the vision, don't give up... "attempt great things for God" (P.s: The cost of the vision also very heavy for Carey, especially for the family).

4) Bible: People Must Know God's Written Word. E.A. Annett writes: "In early days, while still engaged at his shoemaking, Carey hammered out his system of evangelization. With sanctified genius, he had recognized that the main instrument in the great work must be the Bible translated into the vernaculars of the peoples." With no formal education or any language-grammar training, Carey and his friends - the trio - learned the Indian languages through self-taught and by practice. They, together with Indian pundits, have translated the entire Bible and/or in part into 29+ languages and dialects. One time their printing house was on fire but the next day they started all over again. Just like Martin Luther and William Tyndale, when the people understand the Bible in their languages, reformation - spiritually and intellectually - will unavoidably happen. Such is the power of God's Word unleashed!

5) Humility: In the End, to God Be the Glory. Mr. Carey was the most industrious man. He teaches in the university, he translates the Bible daily, he preaches in the public, he trains new preachers, he studies always, he leading prayer meetings, he wrote letters, he wrote books and pamphlets, he devours every morning to reading and meditating, he defends and protects the Mission from the enemies (both from within and without), he loves to examine insects, birds, and plants, he takes care of his garden and more. Of course, as he gets older, he can't do most of these things. And yet, with all that he has done for God, he never takes off his eyes from the Lord, the One who has done everything through him. One day he responded to his guest, "Mr. Duff, you have been speaking about Dr. Carey, Dr. Carey; when I am gone say nothing about Dr. Carey - speak about Dr. Carey's Savior." Wow! In the little cemetery where he was buried, there is a simple inscription (chosen by himself) that say:

WILLIAM CAREY
Born August 17, 1761
Died June 9, 1834

"A wretched, poor and helpless worm,
On Thy kind arms I fall."
