On 4th November 2020, Hillsong founding pastor Brian Houston sent an email to Hillsong East Coast informing them that Carl Lentz had been fired as the lead pastor of the New York City location. Houston cited “leadership issues and breaches of trust, plus a recent revelation of moral failures” as reasons for Lentz’s termination. In his Instagram post, Lentz admitted to being “unfaithful in my marriage, the most important relationship in my life.” This is not the first case nor the last one. It’s not so much about Carl but it’s about you and me too. We all have the potential and exposes to moral failure.

Menurut Kamu, Siapakah Yesus Itu? (Matius 16:13-17)

 

Soalan pertama Yesus Kristus kepada para murid-Nya ialah: "Menurut kata orang, siapakah Anak Manusia ini?" (Matius 16:13). Soalan ini senang kerana ia menurut pendapat orang lain dan tidak memerlukan kita untuk berfikir panjang dan kritikal, hanya terus mencari maklumat. Tetapi soalan kedua Yesus lebih peribadi dan memerlukan kita untuk menilai diri dan kepercayaan dengan lebih dalam lagi: "Menurut kamu, siapakah Aku ini?" (16:15).

Angelus' Quote: "Be still and know that I am God"

 

Jesus Christ taught us to pray with reverence fear when He modelled for us: “Holy be your name” (Matthew 6:9). His phrase, although it is a statement of truth, is also a petition, not a proclamation. A request, not an announcement. “Be holy, Lord.” Do whatever it takes to be holy in my life. Exalt yourself. Glorify yourself. You be Lord, and I’ll be quiet.

The Psalmist wrote what God said, “Be still and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). This verse contains a command with a promise. The command? "Be still," cover your mouth, bend your knees, wait on Him. The promise? You will "know that I am God." Amid today's global pandemic, make it a point to be still. Set your sights on Him. Let God be God. Pray, "Only by grace and mercy, Lord be holy in my life" 😊💪⚡ #ServeToLead

I love reading good Bible commentaries. I believe that the best way (the only way) to understand the Christian faith is to read and study the Bible, then the next best books in order of importance have to be those which help in the understanding of the written Word of God, namely, Bible commentaries. Although there is a place for technical and scholarly commentaries, especially when you want to use it for Bible Study or sermon preparations; for leisure reading and reflections, I suggest reading expository commentary (like this one) and devotional commentary (like those by J.C. Ryle's). Reading Ironside's expository commentary is like reading his sermons - plain and pointed, simple and systematic, challenging, and life-changing. On the back cover: "[This commentary series] offers concise outlines of the biblical text along with insightful and practical comments that bring out the essential truths of God's Word." Ah, this is not a mere marketing wordings but an accurate statement.

Like me but way better than me, Henry Allan Ironside never formally ordained (C.H. Spurgeon said, "God ordained me, not men." Amen!). Nevertheless, he is considered one of the leading biblical scholars of his generation. Ironside’s teaching left a long-lasting mark on evangelicalism. Along with others such as Cyrus Scofield, he was influential in popularizing dispensationalism and fundamentalism among Protestants. With that understanding, if you don't agree with these sub theologies, read this commentary anyway - or any of his books and commentaries - with discernment but also with the assurance of knowing that this man is biblically sound (have errors but not heresy) and godly (but not perfect). He convinces that teaching the Bible and living the Bible are interconnected. "If lips and life do not agree, the testimony will not amount to much," he writes to himself and us. All credit to his God and Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ 😊⚡📖

Angelus' Quote: Is Growing Old Making Me Any Closer to Christ?

 

I'm finishing H.A. Ironside's commentary on the pastoral epistles. In it, he told a story of how as a boy he used to be amazed when he heard an old preacher say in public prayer, "O Lord, keep my eyes on the Lord Jesus. Don't let me become a wicked old man." He used to wonder why the old man prayed like that until he grows older himself, seeing first-hand how many people become wicked old men because they got their eyes off Christ.

"Oh, how many have fought a good fight for years and then in some way, even in old age when we think one should be free from temptations, they have been broken down, perhaps because of self-confidence!" writes H.A. Ironside. "They have gotten their eyes off the Lord. Some who made a good record for many years have had a dishonourable old age." As you age, are you getting closer to Christ? Do You Have a Reading Mentor? #1Book1Week November 2020

 

Do you have mentors? I hope you do. If you can, find one mentor for each skill that you want to develop. As for me, I want to develop in these areas: leadership, evangelism, attitude, and developing others (L.E.A.D.). As for evangelism, the late Charles H. Spurgeon is one of my distant (long death) mentors. I've read a dozen of his biographies and books. All in my library at home. I wish I can meet him in person and learn by observing his life. But he is the man of the past born in British in 1834 and died in 1892. His passion for winning souls is very contagious. His sermons are powerful and God-centred. Another thing that I admire about Spurgeon is his love for books. I want to emulate his reading habit but I'm far from his genius, concentration, and comprehension power.

From an early age, Spurgeon was a reader — and gradually became a ferocious reader, usually reading 6 books per week (that's #6Books1Week) even amid a busy schedule of sermon preparations (usually he preached 4-10 sermons a week), writing books and editing the monthly magazine. By the end of his life, he amassed a library of over 7,000 books. No doubt this reading habit played a major part in moulding his mind to powerfully unpack biblical truth with the clarity and imagination he is known for. The Prince of Preachers advises: "Give yourself unto reading. The man who never reads will never be read; he who never quotes will never be quoted. He who will not use the thoughts of other men’s brains proves that he has no brains of his own. You need to read [books]." Yes sir! Of course, he read mostly heavy theological books (just admire his God-given brain, don't need to compare) but he also read many 'secular' books.

Kedaulatan & Penetapan TUHAN: Kerusakan Total & Tanggungjawab Manusia (Matius 16:2-3)

 

Apabila saya membaca tentang orang Farisi dan Saduki, saya melihat mereka sebagai orang yang buta rohani (Matius 16:1). Respon Yesus Kristus kepada mereka ialah: "Munafik! Kamu dapat meramalkan cuaca dengan melihat tanda-tanda di langit, tetapi kamu tidak dapat memahami tanda-tanda zaman ini" (16:2-3). Alkitab Versi Borneo (AVB) sangat tepat untuk ayat ini, mereka "tidak dapat" atau "you cannot" (ESV, NIV) dan "can ye not" (KJV). Mereka tidak mahu dan mereka tidak dapat melihat secara rohani tentang siapa Yesus.

Bagaimana ini boleh terjadi? Setiap pemimpin yang berkarisma ada dua kualiti yang saya selalu perhatikan: #1 Mereka kurang bersabar, dan #2 Mereka ada ego yang kuat. Pada pendapat saya, dua kualiti ini boleh digunakan sebagai kekuatan. Kurang bersabar boleh membawa kepada urgensi, keinginan untuk bertindak dan berfikir secara praktikal. Ego pula kadang-kadang boleh menambah keyakinan dan menguatkan pendirian seorang pemimpin.

Namun begitu, kamu dan saya tahu yang dua kualiti ini juga sangat bahaya, cenderung menjadi kelemahan dan mudah menjadi batu sandungan kepada orang lain. Oleh itu, setiap pemimpin harus sentiasa menilai diri sendiri dan sedar bahawa tidak semua orang seperti mereka. Jika bersalah, "Minta maaf" dengan jujur. Jika ada peluang, secepat mungkin ucap, "Terima kasih" dengan ikhlas. Tidak ada pemimpin yang berjaya sendirian, mesti ada orang yang membantu dia. Sound Doctrine, Ajaran Yang Benar, Ajaran Yang Sehat

 

Masa ini sudah tiba, malah TUHAN pernah bernubuat melalui perantaraan nabi Amos: "'Sesungguhnya, akan datang waktunya,' demikianlah firman Tuhan Allah, 'Aku akan menimpakan kebuluran atas negeri ini – bukan kelaparan dan kehausan kerana tiada makanan atau tiada air, melainkan untuk mendengar firman TUHAN'" (8:11).

Ashamed of The Gospel: When the Church Becomes Like the World
(2010, Third Edition) by John MacArthur

Our Lord Jesus Christ reminds the disciples: "Whoever is ASHAMED OF ME and OF MY WORDS in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also BE ASHAMED when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels" (Mark 8:38). The apostle Paul reminds the church: "I AM NOT ASHAMED OF THE GOSPEL, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek" (Romans 1:16). And almost at the end of his life, he reminds his timid protégé, Timothy: "Therefore DO NOT BE ASHAMED of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God... which is why I suffer as I do. But I AM NOT ASHAMED, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me" (2 Timothy 1:8, 12).

John MacArthur argues that the American Church is heading - in fact here and now, even worst - back to the Down-Grade Controversy* during the time of Charles H. Spurgeon. Progressive theology, liberalism, (post) modernism, pragmatism, seeker-sensitive, and the worldliness of the churches today are getting worst and worst. Shocking but not surprising since the Scripture already warned us in 2 Timothy 3. I figure whatever happened to the churches in America will eventually happen here in Malaysia. I have observed it here already. Instead of God-centered, our churches become human-centered. Instead of Word-saturated, the pastors preach on self-motivated. Instead of the Gospel of Christ, the people crave entertainment and organize miss world a.k.a. ratu cantik di gereja. Sometimes I cannot see the difference between the church and the world. Generally speaking, we are ASHAMED OF THE GOSPEL.

As usual, MacArthur tackles these issues with grace and firmness, the balance between exposing the falsehood and the exposition of the truth of God's Word, outlining the bankruptcy of show-time religion and the power of God unto salvation. I've read this book once and now that I read it again, I found many unnoticed treasures. It encourages, reminds, and warns me if I ever compromising the truth (Lord, am I ashamed of your Gospel?). I can finish it earlier but I deliberately reading it slowly and sometimes repeatedly to savor the nuggets of truth found in this finely written classic. Angelus' Quote: Pray! Pray! Pray!

 

It is natural to pray for healing for loved ones. It is Biblically sound to do so. And most of the time our first reaction to sickness is to pray for healing and miracle. I did the same too and I can understand that. But I was thinking, is healing the best solution for every sickness? I don't think so. The best solution is the prayer of submission like our Lord Jesus Christ, "Not my will but Yours [Father's will] be done."

It doesn't mean you shouldn't be praying for healing or asking the Father to do a miracle (before that Jesus prayed, “Father if you are willing, take this cup from me...") but after you pour out your heart, at the end of the day you must submit to His will. Sometimes dying is better than healing. I was thinking too why don't we also pray for the salvation of the ones we loved and witness to them about the Gospel. We almost have no time praying for the sinners who, when they die without Christ, will go to Christ-less eternity 🙏⚡📖 #ServeToLead #GodsWill #HealingOrDying

Bila Orang Munafik Meminta Tanda Dari Syurga (Matius 16:1-4)

 

Dalam awal pelayanan Yesus Kristus "ramailah orang yang menanggung pelbagai penyakit dan penderitaan, orang yang dirasuk roh iblis, yang menghidap penyakit gila babi, dan yang lumpuh, dibawa kepada-Nya dan disembuhkan oleh-Nya" (Matius 4:24). Selalu juga "hati-Nya berbelas kasih terhadap [orang ramai] lalu Dia menyembuhkan orang yang sakit dalam kalangan mereka" (14:14). Orang bangsa asing pula "merayu Yesus supaya mengizinkan orang sakit menyentuh hujung jubah-Nya. Semua yang menyentuhnya terus sembuh" (14:35-36).

Dan rumusan kepada semua yang dilakukan oleh Yesus: "Yang bisu bercakap, yang cacat dipulihkan, yang tempang berjalan, dan yang buta melihat, lalu mereka memuji Allah Israel" (15:31; 11:4-6). Namun begitu, orang Farisi dan Saduki masih lagi ingin "meminta-Nya menunjukkan suatu tanda dari syurga" (16:1) 😡😤👊 Siapa mereka ini? Apa lagi yang mereka mahu? Apa jawab Yesus? An Indian told a missionary that he believed in Jesus Christ and meant to give Him his love someday. A native helper turned to him and said,

"If you and I were walking through the jungle and came face to face with a tiger if I placed myself in front of you and said, 'Run, brother, for your life!' would you love me?"

"Yes, surely."

"When, someday?"

The native saw the power of the friend's argument and said, "I will give myself to Him now."

What is your tiger? Near-death experience? Cancer? The meaningless of life? The burden of sins? Your time is short, and only in this life, you have the opportunity to come to Him. Not someday, but NOW. Jesus with a clear and simple term said: “I am the way and the truth and the life. Enam (6) Kebenaran Tentang Allah Israel Melalui Yesus Kristus (Matius 15:32-39)

 

Yesus Kristus "memanggil murid-murid-Nya lalu berkata, 'Aku berbelas kasihan kepada orang ramai ini. Sudah tiga hari mereka bersama-Ku; sekarang mereka kehabisan makanan. Aku tidak mahu menyuruh mereka pulang dengan perut kosong, kalau-kalau pengsan nanti di tengah jalan'" (Matius 15:32. Baca juga ayat 9:36, 14:14 dan 20:34). Lihat apa isi hati Yesus: "Aku berbelas kasihan." Mazmur 145:9 berkata tentang Allah: "Belas kasihan-Nya meliputi semua ciptaan-Nya."

He came upon a little boy who dipping water from the ocean with a shell and pouring the water into a hole of sand. "What are you doing?" Augustine asked the child. Augustine went his way. Currently, I'm rereading John MacArthur's Ashamed of the Gospel (together with R.C. Sproul's The Holiness of God). In this meaty book, MacArthur is dealing with the modern-day Down-Grade Controversy. As he compares the Biblical Church to the User-Friendly Church nowadays, he touches on the topic of success: "Size [of the church] does not signify blessing. And popularity is no barometer for success... In Scripture, big budgets, affluent members, and large membership rolls are NEVER portrayed as valid goals.

"Paul was not telling Timothy how to be 'successful'; he was not instructing him on techniques for increasing attendance figures; he was encouraging him to pursue the DIVINE STANDARD... It is not prosperity, power, prominence, popularity, or any of the other worldly notions of success. Bila Orang Bangsa Asing Memuji Allah Israel (Matius 15:29-31)

 

Pada awalnya, Yesus Kristus berkata, “Aku diutus khusus kepada keturunan kaum Israel yang seperti domba yang hilang" (Matius 15:24). Tetapi apabila Dia datang ke kawasan atau daerah orang bukan Israel (ayat 29), Dia menyembuhkan mereka semua yang datang kepada-Nya (ayat 30-31).

One of the most important books on mission and evangelism that I ever read is by Oswald J. Smith, The Challenge of Missions (1959). In the part where he also touches on leadership, he wrote this ever-relevant insight: "A real leader will make mistakes. The man who never makes mistakes never does anything. I would rather make a hundred mistakes and accomplish something than to make no mistakes and accomplish nothing. Mistakes are not sins. Man always has and always will err. Bagaimana Memiliki Iman Teguh (Matius 15:21-28)

 

Matius 15:22, "Seorang wanita Kanaan yang tinggal di situ datang mendapatkan Yesus sambil berseru, 'Wahai Tuan, Anak Daud! Kasihanilah aku! Anak perempuanku dirasuk roh iblis, dan menderita!'" Ada dua masalah disana dan ada dua perkara yang wow disana. Dua masalah: 1) Dia seorang "wanita." Dalam budaya Timur Tengah pada masa itu, wanita seringkali dilihat sebagai secondclass; dan 2) Dia seorang "Kanaan." Bangsa atau orang Kanaan ialah musuh bagi orang Israel sejak dari dulu lagi.

Walauapapun, Yesus tetap menerima dan berinteraksi dengan wanita Kanaan ini 😮 Dua wow: 1) Dia memanggil Yesus sebagai tuan ("Lord" atau "Master") tanda hormat; dan 2) Dia memanggil Yesus "Anak Daud". Panggilan bagi Kristus atau Mesias menurut Perjanjian Lama 😇 Bukankah ini sesuatu yang wow? Kenapa Yesus berkata bahawa dia "teguh iman"? Five (5) Rules of Relationships (#GrowingLeader)

Relationships help us define who we are and what we can become. In the area of leadership, relationships are crucial. In fact, John C. Maxwell, who taught me to be R.E.A.L. (Relationship, Equipping, Attitude, Leadership), says, "Relationships are the foundation of leadership." I don't know about you, but I'm naturally not a people person. So these five (5) rules help me a lot:

1) GET ALONG WITH YOURSELF - The one relationship you will have until you die is with yourself. Treat yourself with the respect and love you deserve.

2) VALUE PEOPLE - You cannot make another person feel important if you secretly feel that he or she is a nobody. Recognize that everyone has innate value and treat them accordingly.

3) MAKE THE EFFORT TO FORM RELATIONSHIPS - The result of a person who has never served others? Loneliness (I always see this in WhatsApp statuses). Be proactive! Make the effort. Reach out.

4) UNDERSTAND THE RECIPROCITY RULE - What you put into the lives of others comes back into your own. That's why I love to inspire you through LEGASI.tv. Your growth is my joy.

5) FOLLOW THE GOLDEN RULE - Do unto others as you would have them do unto you (but take considerations of people's real needs, contexts, and personalities).
