Start With What You Have (Not What You Don't Have)

Don't let what you cannot do keep you from doing what you can do. When I started LEGASI.tv, I used to say, "I don't have video camera and laptop", "I don't know how to edit video and graphic"; " I'm not comfortable talking in front of the camera." All of these are just my excuses! I believe if you take the initiative, you'll find an alternative. This statement is not just rhyming but also true ⚡ #ServeToLead #GrowingLeader #StartWithWhatYouHave #InitiativeBringsAlternative #ItIsPossible

A Real Leader Will Make Mistakes

"A real leader will make mistakes," said Oswald J. Smith, a missionary and an author. The man or woman who never makes mistakes never does anything. I would rather make a hundred mistakes and accomplish something than to make no mistakes and accomplish nothing.

"Mistakes are not sins," Oswald continues, "Man always has and always will err. God allows him to blunder again and again in order to teach him and keep him humble" #ServeToLead #LeadersWillMakeMistakes #GrowingLeader

Three (3) Lessons I Learned from Hiking Mount Santubong

While on the way down and waiting for others 😛 I made a video, sharing some lessons I learned from hiking Mount Santubong 😀 This is my third times this year, so I share Three Lessons:

#1 It's Not the Mountain that We Conquer, But Ourselves 💪 Every day we need to conquer the 'mountains' of laziness, procrastination, and bad habits. It's daily battles of conquering ourselves.

#2 To Climb the Mountain, It Requires Fitness 🏋️‍ Only when we climb then we know either we're fit or not. In life, we need to strengthen our physical fitness, without it we can't do much; take care of emotional fitness too, so that you won't give up easily; and don't forget about your spiritual fitness. The spiritual life is more real than you can ever imagine! All these require hard work, discipline, determination, and perseverance.

#3 There Will Always Be More Mountain to Climb 🎒 Someone once said, "Success is never final, failure is never fatal." Never stop improving yourself, dream on, go on 'climbing,' and hike another 'mountain' (or the same). Challenge yourself. Don't fear failure, embrace it. By doing this, you also show others that it is possible for them to do the same!

Dwayne Johnson on The Bright Side of Failure (Video)

Every successful person - either monetary, good life, spirituality, making a difference in the world - we see today has experienced failure at some points in life. Failure is part of the growth process. It’s a trial that prepares one in order to appreciate success when it finally arrives 😬

There’s a universal truth that states: "Sustained success can only be ever achieved through failure." This means we must experience failure, but we don’t have to embrace it. Sometimes the thing that you thought you want but doesn't happen can be "the best thing that never happened in your life," said Dwayne Johnson 😉 See the bright side ⚡☀🌞

Angelus' Quote: Success Is A Few Simple Disciplines Practiced Every Day

Practice every day. It's not the big things that make the difference as to whether or not you succeed in life. It is "nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day."

It's the little things that you do - and KEEP DOING - that determine whether you will achieve your goals or spend your life dreaming about them.

When I first write my blog, it starts with one article every day. When I start a FB Page, I post every day. When I want to speak on leadership, I organized one event after another. When I read a book, I start with a page first. Keep it up! 😉

Leaders Don't Give Up When Leading Gets Difficult (Angelus Leadership Video)

[Video original source: YouTube, Little Zen Monkey🙉]

There come times in the lives of all great leaders when they are pushed to their physical, emotional, mental or spiritual limits. Fatigued, exhausted and drained by their experiences, they still relentlessly pursue their journey. They never give up. It is their attitude and mindset to hold on to their hopes, dreams, determination and life’s purpose.

Pause and reflect a moment on the words of other great leaders who shared their counsel and learning about giving up 💪🙃🙏:

“When you exhausted all possibilities, remember this: You haven’t.” (Thomas Edison)

“Never give up on what you really want to do. The person with big dreams is more powerful than one with all the facts.” (Albert Einstein)

“Having a rough morning? Place your hand over your heart. Feel that? That’s called purpose… you’re alive for a reason. Don’t give up.” (Melissa Joy)

“It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.” (Vince Lombardi)

“It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up.” (Babe Ruth)

“Falling down is how we grow. Staying down is how we die.” (Brian Vaszily)

Angelus' Quote: Don't Give Up, Encourage Yourself

Like I said before, I read Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich three times already. It is the king of all self-help and personal development books. But before it became famous, helped millions of people change their lives, and making Napoleon Hill a great success in the process, many people don't know what he went through in the early years to get it to the marketplace. Nobody would have known him and the book if he had given up or more importantly, given into people's criticism and rejection. But he stayed on because he believes in what he was doing.

This is the words he sent to his wife, Mrs. Florence Hill when he was about to give up (18th Feb 1925):

"We will soon be having lots of money. Leave it to me to get it, but meanwhile, encourage me and tell me you think I CAN DO IT. You have no idea what it is like when not a soul on earth encourages you, and all the negative forces pour in on you. It takes super-human strength of will to throw them off. I would give anything if I had someone, even though they did not mean it or believe it, to tell me that they KNEW I COULD SUCCEED. I would like to hear this every day, and sometimes twice a day. I keep telling myself this, but it is not as if it came from an outsider. The other self in me keeps denying it when I say it. I suppose you understand what I am talking about, or DO YOU? If you do then you can sympathize with me, and perhaps you will help me. All I need is a little encouragement right now, and I will go over in a big way and bring home the bacon."

Don't give in to people's criticism and rejection or the lack of encouraging words from others. It’s hard, yes, but don't give up. If nobody gives it to you, ask others. If they don't want, then encourage yourself!

Three Feet from Gold: Turn Your Obstacles Into Opportunities! (2010) by Sharon Lechter with Greg Reid, Book Review

Three Feet from Gold: Turn Your Obstacles Into Opportunities! (2010)
by Sharon Lechter with Greg Reid

One of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting when one is overtaken by temporary defeat.” This interesting success journey allegory (or fable) is based on Napoleon Hill’s revolutionary bestseller Think and Grow Rich. It is about a young entrepreneur, Greg Reid (co-author as the character), who was struggling in his business and life, went through a life-changing series of encounters with some of today’s foremost business leaders and inspirational figures. When he was about to give up, only “three feet from gold,” his mentors inspired him with their stories and encouragements. When I read his story, I read mine. Truly, Napoleon once said: “Every adversity, every failure, and every heartache carries with it the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit.

The title Three Feet from Gold is based on a real-life story of R.U. Darby (you can find it in Think and Grow Rich introduction). His uncle had been struck by gold fever. He had traveled west to get rich in the mining business. In the book, Don Green, one of Greg interviewees told him the story: “This would-be prospector had many more hopes than solutions, you see because he had not invested the time to learn how to do what he wanted to accomplish. He just wanted to find gold… Fortunately, after weeks of manual labor, Darby’s uncle was rewarded with the discovery of gold, and lots of it! While it was a good problem to have, he quickly realized that he really wasn’t prepared. He needed machinery to remove the enormous amount of heavy rocks and dirt that covered the shining ore…” to own machinery it will cost lots of money, so Darby’s uncle covered the mine and traveled back to his home to persuade his family and friends to invest for the equipment needed. After that, he and young Darby return to the gold mine and start digging for the promised treasure. Sure enough, they found high-quality gold!

Don continues, “Darby and his uncle were convinced they were about to make a huge fortune from their gold mine. Then tragedy struck… the gold simply disappeared. Just when their hopes were at their highest, the Darbys were crushed to reach the end of the rainbow – the proverbial pot of gold was no longer there… Discouraged and defeated, Darby and his uncle sold both their mine and their equipment to a local junkman… With that, [they] caught the next train and returned to their home in Maryland, ending their quest for gold… [But] the junkman hired a mining engineer to inspect the claim, and together they discovered what is known as a fault line. The engineer explained that gold ran in long veins and that the previous owners had simply drilled through one side of the vein and come out the other. The engineer explained that if the junkman were to go back and dig in the other direction, perpendicular to where the Darbys had made their first discovery, he would most likely tap back into the treasure… [He] followed these simple instructions and, sure enough, he hit one of the largest pockets of ore ever uncovered – a mere three feet away from where the Darbys had quit mining…” They quit only three feet from gold!

Darby learned his lesson and used that experience as motivation for him not to quit his next chosen work. Hill recorded him saying: “I stopped three feet from gold, but I will never stop because men say ‘no’ when I ask them to buy insurance.” You know what? Darby became one of the most successful salesmen of his time. When Greg heard this story, he was determined not to quit from pursuing his dreams in business and life. Through ups and downs, external circumstances and internal conflicts, Greg don’t – but almost – quit! By the end of the chapter, Greg and his co-author, Sharon Lechter (both as characters in the book itself) produced a book based on his interviews and life experiences. They came out with The Success Equation, namely, ((P + T) x A x A) + F. P stands for Passion, something that makes your heart sing; with T stands for Talent, something you excel in; multiply it by the right A stands for Association, successful people or organizations; and A stands for Action, concrete steps you can take toward your goal; and then add your F stands for Faith, the unwavering belief in yourself. So, keep moving toward your God-given dreams, never giving up or quitting – you are Three Feet from Gold!

Angelus' Quote: Not Only Dream but Believe, Not Only Believe but Act

Let me cut the story short: Colonel Harland David Sanders (September 9, 1890 – December 16, 1980), who at the customary age of 65 received his first old age pension social security payment felt so dissatisfied that he decided to do something about it. Taking full responsibility for himself and with an idea in his mind, he changed his life with the only asset he had – a family recipe for fried chicken.

At 65 he started to try and find restaurant owners who would pay him a share in their increased profits for their fried chicken sales that used his special recipe. 1,007 times he was told “No!”(Definitely, if he were to come to me with this idea, I would probably say no too). Only the 1,008th time, he received a resounding “Yes!" 9 years later he sold his business for USD2,000,000. That was a huge amount of money… the rest is history. Today his influence of idea is greatly known as Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC).

Colonel Sanders said, “I could have just complained about the system, cursed my luck and blamed everyone else, but I would have still been trying to live on that social security income, I had got me in that position. It was up to me to get me out.” If he never got the idea, take the action, persevere in the midst of 1,000 times rejection, relentlessly achieving his dream – we will probably never taste his famous fried chicken. We will never hear of his great idea. “One sound idea,” writes Napoleon Hill, “is all you need to achieve success.” So, when you see KFC sign or when you eat at KFC, remember this: To accomplish great things we must, not only dream but believe, not only believe but act... Do you have a dream? What actions are you taking TODAY?

Angelus' Quote: Quit Now or Don't Quit Later

There is nothing wrong with quitting. Quit smoking. Quit heavy drinking. Quit being a bully. Also, there is nothing wrong with quitting your work or quitting negative relationships. Quit focusing on your weaknesses and focus on your strengths is a good idea. But then, once you're committed to doing it, when you see the end goal is worth the fight, when in the long-term you see the better you - and for the glory of God - don't quit! For example, I can play the guitar and sing well, so I thought I want to be a worship leader. But I also love to study and teach God's Word. I can do both but I won't be great at either, so, I quit becoming a worship leader and concentrate on teaching. At first, I have difficulty in delivering a message, I was somewhat shy, stutter, and disorganized. But I practice, practice and practice. I know this is my calling so I don't quit. I'm a much better teacher than a worship leader. So, Quit NOW (while it still early) or don't quite LATER (persevere, endurance, don't give up). Araso?

Timothy, Work Hard Even at the Point of Suffering - It Is Worth it (1 Timothy 4:10-11)

"This is why we work hard and continue to struggle [or to suffer], for our hope is in the living God, who is the Saviour of all people and particularly of all believers. Teach these things and insist that everyone learn them"
(1 Timothy 4:10-11, NLT)

Every bit of suffering Paul the Apostle experienced and all the agony he went through for the sake of "the glorious Good News entrusted to [him] by our blessed God" (1 Timothy 1:11) was worth it because his trust was in the living God who "is the Saviour of all people and particularly of all believers" – and that God is worth trusting and will never let us down. Therefore, "work hard" on yourself and for the Lord! "Thrown ourselves into this venture so totally," said Eugene Peterson, "We're banking on the living God." If you work hard to warn others about apostasy and false teachings (read 1 Timothy 4:1-6) and work hard to "train yourself to be godly" (1 Timothy 4:7), you'll suffer but it will be worth it! Paul said in 2 Timothy 3:12 that "Everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution" but it will be worth it! Why? Because if you warn others about their wicked schemes, you'll be hated; and if you be godly in the world where sins are praised, you'll be persecuted. Take heart! Our hope is in the living God, not the imaginary one! It is worth it!

Now, let us come to one of the most controversial verses in the Scripture, "the Saviour of all people." Does Paul teach universalism, that all men will eventually be saved? I say NO because how then could He be the special or particular Saviour "of all believers"? Paul once addressed the Athenians saying that "in [God] we live and move and exist" (Acts 17:28). This text tells me that even the very life and breath of unbelievers who may blaspheme God is a gift from God. Even now God is "saving" them from going to hell and giving them physical life and opportunity to be saved. In a way, God is the Saviour of all people. During Paul's time, the emperor of Rome was called "the Saviour of the world" by reason of the fact that he was the preserver of mankind by his ‘benevolent' reign. Then how much more is our God "the Saviour of all people" in the sense that everything good and gracious comes from His hand, even life itself. However, God is the Saviour "particularly of all believers" in Christ. I like how Life Application Bible Study interprets this verse: "Christ is the Saviour of all, but His salvation becomes effective only for those who trust Him." Amen and hallelujah!

The importance of what Paul has just been saying is emphasized by him when he admonishes Timothy to "teach these things and insist that everyone learn them."  Albert Barnes commentary on 1 Timothy 4:11 notes: "It follows from this, that a minister of the gospel is solemnly bound to teach that there is a sense in which God is the Saviour of all people. He is just as much bound to teach this, as he is that only those will be saved who believe. It is a glorious truth - and it is a thing for which a man should unceasingly give thanks to God that he may go and proclaim that He has provided salvation for all, and is willing that all should come and live." Do it Timothys – it is worth it!

Self-Leadership #9 Be Mentally Tough

I toughen my mind every day. I think every day, I read every day, I learned every day. I do it so that when I'm facing difficulties or challenges in the future – I'm ready. I believe it is one of the most important leadership skills. What is mental toughness? It is the ability to hold on to one's goals in the face of the pressure and stress. When tested, hold on. When fail, try again – harder, smarter. Persevere relentlessly. In a team, mental toughness is the glue that holds us together when the heat is on, and it helps us persevere just a little bit longer. It implies a firm resolve to stay in the course over the long-term rather than a burst of short-lived activity. It is not the ability to survive a mistake or failure; it's the ability to come back stronger from failure.

When the going gets tough, it takes a special kind of mental toughness to fight back. I use these 7 inspiring quotes as a personal reminder for me to strengthen my mind:

"Mental toughness is spartanism with qualities of sacrifice, self-denial, dedication.
It is fearlessness, and it is love" (Vince Lombardi)

"It takes energy, mental toughness, and spiritual reinforcement to successfully deal with life's opportunities and to reach your objectives" (Zig Ziglar)

"Concentration and mental toughness are the margins of victory" (Bill Russell)

"Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal;
nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude" (Thomas Jefferson)

"It's when the discomfort strikes that they realize a strong mind
is the most powerful weapon of all" (Chrissie Wellington)

"Strong minds suffer without complaining;
weak minds complain without suffering" (Lettie Cowman)

"You have power over your mind, not outside events.
Realize this, and you will find strength" (Marcus Aurelius)

Like leadership, mental toughness is not something that people are born with. Instead, it's learned. We start small, achieving a minor goal. Then we set our sights higher and succeed again. If we work patiently, we will prevail. Each time we raise the bar of personal goal, we gain skills and confidence that make the next success more likely. This cycle – hard work, success, more hard work, more success, with the occasional setbacks and failures – is the crucial process of the making of your character that will be part of you. Good things take time, usually lots of time. But if you persist, determine and resolve you'll be stronger mentally – you will be unstoppable!

Here are three (3) ways to develop mental toughness:

Keep the Pressure On: Good leaders don't avoid pressure, they work themselves through it! They work constantly to improve and stay focus. Keep the pressure on but stay within your own breaking points.

Never Give In: It's easy to do well when there's no pressure or stress but how many of us can stay firm when defeat is knocking on the door? Mental toughness is not rigidity in the face of adversity; it is stability and poise in the face of challenge.

Work at It: Mental toughness is the willingness to keep commitments you make to yourself. It's singleness of purpose. It's the ability to stay motivated no matter what obstacles arise in your path.

Self-Leadership #8 Be Prepared to Sacrifice

When we hear the word sacrifice, we often think of completely selfless acts in which someone does something for another entirely for the other person's benefit. The image of a soldier sacrificing his life for his comrades frequently comes to mind. But sacrifice isn't purely selfless. The best definition of sacrifice is one that I found in American Heritage Dictionary: "To forfeit something for something else considered to have a greater value." Sacrifice does not mean giving up something for nothing; it means giving up one thing for something else we believe is worth more, "a greater value." This means a leader who lays down his life for his family or for his team has chosen to place more value on their lives than on his own.

In The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, John C. Maxwell points out that the Law of Sacrifice says, "A leader must give up to go up." A leader cannot achieve and get something without giving up something in return. In order to attain something you believe is of greater value, you must give up something you believe is of lesser value. Our society today tries to minimize sacrifice at every turn, promising people that they can fulfill their desires without having to forsake anything at all. "Lose weight without giving up your favorite foods!" "Get ripped without long workouts!" "Get rich without having to work hard!" All of these are fantasies! Leaders understand that there is always a price to pay. Time, energy, money, commitment – all require sacrifice. Without hard work, pain, turmoil, commotion, anxiety, stress, and tension, there is no growth, no change. You must pay the price!

Here are three (3) ways to think about sacrifice:

Sacrifice Leads to Success: Its sacrifice, during all those hours of training that equips you to hang in there against all odds. Sacrifice and self-denial lie behind every success.

Use Failure as Stepping Stones: It hurts to fall short of a goal. However, when you use a failure to your advantage, it can become merely a stepping stone on the road to victory.

Pay the Price: Greatness is worth the cost. Great achievements require courage, determination, drive, and a willingness to pay the price.

John C. Maxwell on Leadership #13 Becoming More Solution Oriented

How do you look at life? Do you see a solution in every challenge or a problem in every circumstance? To make yourself a more solution-oriented team player…

Refuse to give up. Think about an impossible situation you and your teammates have all but given up overcoming. Now determine to not give up until you find a solution.

Refocus your thinking. No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking. Set aside dedicated time with key teammates to work on the problem. Make sure it’s prime think time, not leftover time when you’re tired or distracted.

Rethink your strategy. Get out of the box of your typical thinking. Breaking a few rules. Brainstorm absurd ideas. Redefine the problem. Do whatever it takes to generate fresh ideas and approaches to the problem.

Repeat the process. If at first you don’t succeed in solving the problem, keep at it. If you do solve the problem, then repeat the process with another problem. Remember, your goal is to cultivate a solution-oriented attitude that you bring into play all the time.

Do you see a problem in every circumstance or
A solution if every challenge?
