Angelus' Quote: Learning Will Make You Humble

"Humble" is not the first-word people will describe me. I agree. If the term "humble" means slow to give suggestion/feedback, talk softly, look down on oneself, always choose the worst thing and being ignorant, then, I'm far from being 'humble'. I'm rude and brash. But I love to learn. I love wisdom (Philosophy come from the Greek roots philo- meaning "love" and -sophos, or "wisdom").

One of the main ways for me to learn is through reading. One of my favorite subjects is on creative and critical thinking. Next is philosophy. One student mentioned that I must be an expert after the amount of time I had spent on it, and I replied, "It only made me realize how much I didn't know... It is a never-ending process of learning." Studying about the mind, psychology, philosophy, theology, and history had made me very humble (or rather, it humbled me) because I knew I'd never know it all no matter how much I studied.

If you keep on learning, you'll realize how much more you don't know. Thus, every time you learn one thing, it will lead to another thing and so on. Those who stop learning are actually the proud and joyless people. The fact that I love wisdom keeps me young in my mind and heart and eager to learn more, no matter how 'smart' people considered me to be. Bluntly, I say to a group of young students, "I'm 32 years old already, but I have a curiosity and energy of 15 years old. Most of you are no doubt younger than me, but your body and energy are as low as 60+ years old. You must keep learning." Every day is another opportunity to learn something new. Better you start now while you're still young.

If you don't learn, you won't know what you don't know - that will make you a proud person. Never be a know-it-all [I hate young-and-proud-Calvinists and their gurus. They talked as if they know ALL the mystery of God. Theology supposed to humble you, not make you an a**h*l*]. Don't be a fake 'humble' person. In term of growth, ignorance is not a bliss. Take this advice to heart: The more you learn [continuous learning], the more you realize what you don't know [awareness], and this will make you humble [result].

John C. Maxwell on Leadership #13 Becoming More Solution Oriented

How do you look at life? Do you see a solution in every challenge or a problem in every circumstance? To make yourself a more solution-oriented team player…

Refuse to give up. Think about an impossible situation you and your teammates have all but given up overcoming. Now determine to not give up until you find a solution.

Refocus your thinking. No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking. Set aside dedicated time with key teammates to work on the problem. Make sure it’s prime think time, not leftover time when you’re tired or distracted.

Rethink your strategy. Get out of the box of your typical thinking. Breaking a few rules. Brainstorm absurd ideas. Redefine the problem. Do whatever it takes to generate fresh ideas and approaches to the problem.

Repeat the process. If at first you don’t succeed in solving the problem, keep at it. If you do solve the problem, then repeat the process with another problem. Remember, your goal is to cultivate a solution-oriented attitude that you bring into play all the time.

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership: Follow Them and People Will Follow You (10th Anniversary Edition)

If you ask 10 of your respected leaders to recommend 5 books on leadership, I suspect 1 of John Maxwell's books will be on their lists. Of those books, most people will cite The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership as his best work (It's certainly his most well-known). I've read the book once, taking notes and I listened to an audiobook at least twice per year. This good!

In this book, Maxwell dictates the 21 "laws" (not "principles") a leader must follow to get others to follow the leader. "He who thinks he leads," said the author, "but has no followers, is only taking a walk." Using numerous examples drawn from a variety of people from Mother Teresa to the founders of McDonald's, Maxwell shows how people have either used the laws successfully or ignored the laws and failed. Most of the laws are obvious, for example, #14 The Law of Buy-In states that people buy into the leader and only then do they buy into the vision. That makes sense and has a practical application in the real world (example, how we vote leaders).

Some readers have dismissed the book because the laws are easy to understand. These critics miss two significant points: #1 This book codifies and reinforces our thinking. For example, Law #17 The Law of Priorities, cautions against equating activity with achievement. Maxwell points out that we must constantly review our priorities to make sure that we are "steering the ship in the right direction" (this include Law #4 The Law of Navigation). Far beyond leaving it there and stating only the obvious, Maxwell adds that we must always evaluate our priorities with the 80/20 rule in mind. Focus 80 percent of your time on the 20 percent of your priorities that will provide the largest return. He notes that the rule applies equally to developing strategic sales accounts as does it in developing people; #2 This book is a reminder that leadership is a daily commitment. As Maxwell notes in Law #3 The Law of Process, leadership is a process that "develops daily, not in a day." Reading Maxwell's book reinforces what many of us already know about leadership and reminds us to put those theories into practice every day.

Many books on leadership are long on theory but don't help the reader understand how to put the theory into practice. Maxwell does not fall into that trap. At the end of every chapter, he lists three activities we can do to apply the law to our lives. But the truth is Maxwell himself admits that not every leader will have a proficiency in all 21 Laws. Leaders are learners. The author notes that leadership skills can and should be improved through practice. Remember this: "Everything falls and rises on leadership." So, learn!

Jesus Challenges Us to a Deeper Level of Understanding (Mark 8:22-26)

“[Jesus and His disciples] came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, ‘Do you see anything?’ He looked up and said, ‘I see people; they look like trees walking around’”
(Mark 8:22-24, NIV, bracket mine).

The healing miracle of a blind man at Bethsaida is only recorded by Mark. In this case, Jesus took the man away from the crowd before performing the miracle. Why Jesus “took the blind man by the hand”? Why Jesus “led him outside the village”? Why Jesus “spit on the man’s eyes”? I’m not sure what’s really going on here. But for sure this miracle remind me that Jesus is always responded with compassion to people’s need; and based on the context of this text, Jesus wanted to show to his disciples that spiritual insight (they were lack of it, Mark 8:14-21) is similar to the man’s physical insight – it will be restore gradually and fully by faith (as in Mark 8:27-30).

Again, I don’t know why Jesus “took the blind man by the hand” personally, when one of His disciples could have done it. But like spiritual blindness, Jesus wanted to lead us because only He can show us “the way” (John 14:6) to all spiritual truth. Jesus “led him outside the village” probably because He desires the blind man – and even us – to have a more personal one-to-one relationship with Him. In Christianity, spiritual insight and truth will not be reveal in the form of doctrine or theology but in a Person – Jesus is “the truth” (John 14:6). When Jesus “spit on the man’s eyes”, it shows to me that Jesus doesn’t have a fix method of healing. In the same way, Jesus can use whatever method He wills to open our spiritual insight in order for us to see and to realize that He is “the life” (John 14:6).

From “blind” to seeing people “look like trees walking around” to see “everything clearly” (Mark 8:25), the man’s eyes were gradually healed. Why Jesus did the healing in two stages? It may have been because of the man’s lack of faith. His faith was there but it’s not enough; our sight was there but it was not complete. And just as there would be complete healing for the blind man, there is hope for us too. It’s not that Jesus is unable to heal our spiritual insight thoroughly the first time, but Jesus wants us to experience the process of learning the truth of God.

I wonder why after Jesus had done this great miracle, He said to the man, “Don’t even go into the village” (Mark 8:26)? Why not? Most commentaries explained that Jesus didn’t want people to know Him as merely a healer or miracle worker. He don’t want an immediate out pouring of sick people coming to Him for healing and hinder His ultimate mission which is the healing of people’s souls. This explanation is valid and reasonable. But I would like to suggest another additional reason, namely, Jesus wants the man to go home to his family members first and tell them how much He has done for him, and how He has had mercy on him (just like in Mark 5:19). After all, the most important people we want to share the Good News of Jesus Christ after we’re given spiritual insight are those who closest to us!

Jesus' Kingdom grow Quietly and Abundantly (At First, it is Indistinguishable)

Wheat and weeds look very similar, it takes an experienced eyes to discern between them

“’The Kingdom of Heaven is like a farmer who planted good seed in his field. But that night as the workers slept, his enemy came and planted weeds among the wheat, then slipped away. When the crop began to grow and produce grain, the weeds also grew. The farmer’s workers went to him and said, ‘Sir, the field where you planted that good seed is full of weeds! Where did they come from?’ ‘An enemy has done it!’ the farmer explained. ‘Should we pull out the weeds?’ they asked. ‘No,’ he replied, ‘you’ll uproot the wheat if you do. Let both grow together until the harvest. Then I will tell the harvesters to sort out the weeds, tie them into bundles, and burn them, and to put the wheat in the barn.’” (Matthew 13:24-30, NLT).

Jesus explained that the Kingdom grows quietly and abundantly, but evil still exists in the world. As Jesus provides the meaning of this parable in Matthew 13:36-39, he revealed that himself, the “Son of Man” is the farmer; the “field” is the world; the “good seed” symbolizes God’s people; the “weeds” are Satan’s people; the “enemy” is Satan; and the “harvesters” are angels. A common practice in ancient warfare and feuds was to destroy the enemy’s agriculture. Thus, the presence of Satan’s people among the people of God would weaken them. So it seems.

At first, the weeds and wheat are indistinguishable; eventually, however, the differences become obvious. At harvest time, harvesters remove the weeds and get rid of them. The “weeds” may be people in the church (and of course the world too) who appear to be believers, called themselves ‘Christian’, but who never truly believe. Later, the apostles would battle the problem of false teachers who had come from within the ranks of the believers (see, for example, 2 Peter 2:1-3; 13-22), and this problem is still exist even today – until Jesus’ second coming.

As new believers begin to mature in faith, their lives begin to reflect the Holy Spirit’s work, affecting values, perspectives, priorities, attitudes, and actions. Those who aren’t true followers of Christ, however, continue to reflect the values and attitudes of the world. Eventually, the truth will be revealed, and God will judge righteously and send each group to their deserved eternal destination. For the “weeds”, whose who “cause sin” and “do evil” (Matthew 13:41), that will be terrible. But “the righteous will shine like the sun in their Father’s Kingdom” (Matthew 13:43).

Think about this: God is the ultimate judge of who truly belongs to him. We should be slow to judge others, realizing people have different levels of spiritual maturity. Only God knows their hearts. Instead, we can lovingly share the gospel, teach, encourage, and comfort and discipline, when necessary, leaving the final judgment to him. As for you and me, Jesus said we can tell a lot about people by their “fruit”, how they act and what they produce (Matthew 7:20), so what “fruit” are we producing that shows we belongs to Jesus? How our values, perspectives, attitudes, and actions differ from those who don’t know Christ? It is very well with our souls if we can ask these crucial questions to ourselves and examine our own hearts in the light of Christ’ gracious mercy and love. Amen.

Keep Going Day by Day

To come to a point in our Christian lives where it is difficult to keep going does not mean that the Christian faith does not work. Instead, it means that God is taking us down the same road that many of the Bible’s heroes of faith had to experienced, to test out and to strengthen their faith and commitment. That’s why Bible reading and study, especially on the Biblical characters is very beneficial and encouraging to do. Each character like Abraham, Noah, Moses, David, Samuel, Josiah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Peter etc. shows us that Christian faith does work and God can use our uniqueness and weaknesses for His divine purposes.

God may be revealing to us further areas in our lives that need bringing under His control, and sometimes that change in life may be painful! God may be starting to change some of those deep-seated attitudes that are displeasing to Him (Oh, mine are many!), and to teach us qualities that we will need in His plan for our lives. Some of us, like Apostle John, will learn quickly and easily and will know the joy of full commitment. Others of us will be more like Apostle Peter, submitting to the correction again and again, having to learn every lesson the hard way! [On personal note, I’m more of a ‘Peter’ than ‘John’]

One thing we can be sure of is that God will never give up on us. He will not leave us alone or lead us to become a failure, but will constantly use circumstances and the influence of His Holy Spirit to build up Christ-like attitudes in us. Our part is simply to keep going day by day; to learn His lessons, accept His discipline, and rejoice in His love. I’m writing this to genuine Christ followers out there: God will never leave you alone.

Banyak cerita tentang remaja yang sanggup melakukan sesuatu yang pelik dan merbahaya untuk mendapat perhatian daripada rakan-rakan, dan ramai daripada kalangan orang yang bekerja sanggup melakukan sesuatu yang tidak beretika untuk mencapai kejayaan agar dapat tergolong dalam orang-orang elit yang istimewa. Kita mendengar dan membaca (malah mungkin mengenali atau pernah mengalami) mereka yang bertungkus-lumus untuk mencapai kejayaan duniawi kerana mereka mendengar dusta yang mengatakan bahawa nilai diri mereka terletak pada kualiti dan tahap kemampuan mereka sendiri. Atau, pernahkah kamu mendengar tentang remaja atau orang yang keseorangan yang sanggup menjual badan mereka untuk mengalami hubungan intim and untuk mengisi kekosongan di dalam hati mereka kerana mereka mahu diterima, dihargai dan diperlukan oleh orang lain?

Bagi orang Kristian yang betul-betul sudah mengenal Kristus, semua cubaan sebegini hanyalah perbuatan yang sia-sia sahaja. Ini kerana Tuhan Yesus sendiri sudah menerima, menghargai dan mengingini kita sebelum dunia dibentuk. Kita ialah milik Tuhan, kita bermakna bagi Dia dan kita sudah diterima oleh-Nya ke dalam Kerajaan Allah kerana kematian Yesus di kayu salib. Tidak lagi kita perlu bertungkus-lumus untuk mendapat perhatian orang lain – Tuhan telah memilih kita – bukan sahaja menjadi hamba-Nya, malah menjadi sebahagian daripada keluarga Tuhan. Di dalam Al-Kitab ada tertulis, “Ketahuilah bahawa Allah Bapa sangat mengasihi kita! Dia amat mengasihi kita, sehingga kita diakui sebagai anak-anak Allah dan memang kita anak-anak Allah” (1 Yohanes 3:1).

Rasul Paulus lebih radikal apabila dia menulis inspirasi Roh Kudus tentang bagaimana kemurkaan Tuhan telah dibenarkan dengan kematian Yesus di kayu salib. Dia menyatakan bahawa Yesus telah menyelamatkan kita daripada semua dosa kita dan Yesus telah memulihkan hubungan kita dengan Tuhan apabila kita menerima Yesus sebagai juruselamat dan Tuhan kita. “Kita pun bersukacita kerana apa yang sudah dilakukan oleh Allah melalui Tuhan kita Yesus Kristus. Melalui Kristus, kita sekarang dijadikan sahabat-sahabat Allah” (Roma 5:11).

Kesimpulannya: melalui Yesus Kristus, kita sudah diterima, dihargai dan dimiliki oleh Tuhan. Kita bukan sahaja menjadi hamba-Nya, malah kita dianggap Tuhan sebagai anak-anak-Nya sendiri – dan lebih rapat lagi, kita sekarang sudah menjadi sahabat-sahabat Allah.

Every Flower Must Grow Through Dirt

I read a story, and I want to share it with you:

A little girl was walking in a garden when she noticed a particularly beautiful flower. The child admired its beauty and enjoyed its fragrance.

“How lovely!” she exclaimed.

As she gazed on it, her eyes followed the stem down to the soil in which it grew.

“What a shame!” she cried. “This flower is too pretty to be planted in such dirt!”

So she pulled up the plant by its roots and ran to the water faucet to wash away the clinging soil. It wasn’t long until the flower wilted and the plant began to die. The gardener saw what she had done and scolded her.

“You have destroyed my finest plant,” he said.

“But I didn’t like it in that dirt,” whimpered the child.

The gardener replied, “I chose that spot and collected and mixed the soil because I knew that only there it would come to maturity.”

When I read and contemplated on this story, I instantly relate the ‘beautiful flower’ as Christians who are mature in Christ and the ‘dirty soil’ (of course) as troubles that come their ways.  Separate affliction or adversary or hardship or suffering or trouble from Christian life and you will get a wilted and dying ‘flower’. But if you keep the flower in the soil, take care of it and cultivate it – you will get a beautiful ‘flower’. Hendry Ward Beecher writes, “Affliction comes to the believer not to make him sad, but sober; not to make him sorry, but wise. Even as the plow enriches the field so that the seed is multiplied a thousandfold, so affliction should magnify our joy and increase our spiritual harvest.”

…But it is only possible if God is in it: if God be with you.

Hey, you might be in the storm of life. You might be in the lion’s den situation. Your surrounding might be filled with dirt – take heart! Keep your face toward God, the trouble will fall behind you. Even if you die, you shall grow into a beautiful flower in God’s eyes. It is the good dirty soil that makes the flower grows. God may use troubles that come to your way because He knew that only when you have been through it will you come into maturity in Christ. Let the Gardener do His work in you. Keep your faith in Him. Experience His grace in your life. Your troubles may get you closer to Him; that’s the whole point of troubles in Christian life. Yo, every beautiful flowers must grow through dirt!

Your Obedience Life Influences Others

Fiction story: small boy once had a cage full of sparrows. Hoping to teach them to sing he put a canary in the cage with them. A few days later he came running to his mother crying,
“Mom, the canary is chirping like the sparrows!”

Non-fiction story: I once stayed in a home with my Sabahan friends for a week, and you know what happened? Yes, I spoke like Sabahan! And my Sarawakian friends thought I was ‘backsliding’. Funny.

What I mean by both stories: On this side of mortality, you and I may not be able to see how our life influences others. But lo and behold, you may be planting seeds of faith in the lives of people around you (mine maybe already started as you read this blog), seeds that God will continue to nourish and care for until they grow into a faith-saving relationship with Jesus, our Lord and Savior.  Apostle Paul writes to the Corinthians;

“After all, who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only God’s servants through whom you believed the Good News. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work.”
(1 Corinthians 3:5-8NLT)

You see, it’s not important who does what; what’s important is that, by the end of the day – it is God who ‘makes the seed grow’. Try this, instead of anxiously-busy trying too hard to influence people around you, why don’t you just live daily, moment by moment, in obedience to God. Just keep on ‘planting’, keep on ‘watering’, slowly but steady… live in obedience to what’s God calling you daily. Soon or later, either you know it or not – your growth in Christ, your living obedience to God will draws others to Jesus.

Salt give others a taste of Christ; light attract other to Christ.

Your obedience life influences others for Christ.

Book for Pilgrimage

“He (the Jailer) then brought them out and asked,
‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’
They (Peter and Silas) replied,
‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.’”
(Acts 16:30-31NIV, in brackets mine)

It all starts with John Bunyan’s dream…

“As I walked through the wilderness of this world, I lighted on a certain place where was a den, and laid me down in that place to sleep; and as I slept, I dreamed a dream. I dreamed, and behold, I saw a man clothed with rags, standing in a certain place, with his face from his own house, a book in his hand, and a great burden upon his back.

I looked and saw him open the book, and read therein; and as he read, he wept and trembled; and not being able longer to contain, he brake out with a lamentable cry, saying,
“What shall I do?”  (The Pilgrim’s Progress, page 1)

And that’s the beginning of this incredible journey of a lifetime. The Pilgrim’s Progress is an addictive book to read. I asked myself these questions (based on the introductions of this book) as I read this book: Who was this man? Why was he in rags? Why was his back turned to his home? What burden did he carry? What book was in his hands? What in it made him weep and tremble? And why did he cry? I wonder… you might wonder…

The Pilgrim’s Progress is not a devotional classic, it a tale about a man name Christian which we can easily identify with his challenges and difficulties in facing the real world of walking with God and facing temptations that hinders you on your way to this “Celestial City”. It’s a journey. It’s a walk. It’s a pilgrim, of course. And it’s a progress… one step at the time. A process that lighten your ‘great burden’ upon your back; story that leads you to the question of ‘What shall I do?’

The Book is his guidance,

The Evangelist is his signboard,

The Lord is his strength.

Maybe you may have a ‘great burden upon’ your back and you ask ‘What shall I do?’ Maybe this book is for you… a manual book for your important journey in life. Probably, the most important journey in your lifetime! Rosalie de Rosset writes this about John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim Progress,

“The struggle to live out one’s life in a world unwelcoming to the Christian faith is becoming more and more of a reality. We need the help of a Christian who has been there before us, a Christian who never avoided theology, who loved and knew the word of God, who presented suffering in all its rawness and joy in all its exuberance, who in the midst of failure knew who he was and who he belonged to. “This book,” Bunyan said, “will make a traveler of thee.” And . . . there is wonder in this journey.” 

I say, a journey from death to life.
