Developing the Leader Within You 2.0 (2018) by John C. Maxwell, Book Review

Developing the Leader Within You 2.0 (2018) by John C. Maxwell

I read the first version of this book before. I even listened to the audiobook many times and watched videos of live seminars on the same subject. I read lots of John Maxwell's books because I love the way he writes: simple, easy to understand, challenging and applicable. I also can sense his passion, sincerity and authority on the subject of leadership. If you're a young reader, I recommend reading The Winning Attitude and Failing Forward. If you're new on the job (whatever your position), I recommend Talent Is Never Enough and Be A People Person. If you're a manager or in the people business, read Winning with People and 25 Ways to Win with People. If you're a team leader, I wholly recommend The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork and The 17 Essential Qualities of A Team Player. If you want to be a better leader, don't miss The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader and The 5 Levels of Leadership. If you want to grow to be an effective person, read Today Matters and How Successful People Think. But if you want to start to explore John's books, start with Developing the Leader Within You. You'll not regret! (I just purchased Leadershift. Haven’t read it).

The new edition – after 25 years and over 2 million copies sold – of this book contains the 10 foundational lessons for becoming a good leader. John writes, "It's still the first book I recommend that people read to start their leadership development journeys." With more than 80% of the content revised, this new edition is fresh and, of course, much better than the previous one. The 10 foundations are:

#1 The Definition of Leadership: Influence
#2 The Key to Leadership: Priorities
#3 The Foundation of Leadership: Character
#4 The Ultimate Test of Leadership: Creating Positive Change
#5 The Quickest Way to Gain Leadership: Problem Solving
#6 The Extra Plus in Leadership: Attitude
#7 The Heart of Leadership: Serving People
#8 The Indispensable Quality of Leadership: Vision
#9 The Price Tag of Leadership: Self-Discipline
#10 The Expansion of Leadership: Personal Growth

I'm very familiar with John's teachings. Besides listen to his audiobooks, I also listen to The John Maxwell Leadership Podcast. So most of the materials in this book are not new to me and yet, because John is always learning – he takes his own advice on personal growth very seriously – I noticed that his writings are getting more interesting and the examples, stories and quotes are just wonderful. As I examine myself with these foundational lessons, I find that my strengths are (also can be my weaknesses if I'm too confident) problem solving, attitude, self-discipline and personal growth. I want to think that I have influence and character. I just see the importance of priorities a few years ago. I need to improve in creating positive change and vision. And I must learn to serve people with love, care and patient. Like John, patience is my greatest weakness.

I will do a book review video soon. So, much of what I've learned from this book I will share in there. As for now, if you want to continue leading, you got to continue learning. Read books.

Angelus' Quote: Fourth Quality of a Leader

I read, at the University of Santa Clare, California, a researcher conducted a study of 15,000 business managers to determine, among other things, what workers value most in a boss.

The survey revealed that employees respect a LEADER who shows competence, has the ability to inspire workers, and is skillful in providing direction.

But there was a fourth quality they admire even more - INTEGRITY. Above all else, workers wanted a manager whose word is good, a manager who is known for his/her honesty, a manager whom they could trust 🐝

Angelus' Quote: All Leaders Are Readers

Read everything related to your field(s) and interests that you can get your hands on, both print and digital. Leaders understand that education does not stop after school. In order to stay relevant, you need to stay informed with both timeless and timely resources.

Growing up I did NOT like reading (what more, I thought those who read books are boring people). But as I got older, reading’s value became very clear. Growing up in the information age enabled me to read anything I wanted, I quickly realized this allowed me to stay ahead of the curve 📖😀😎

1) Permudahkan mesej
2) Kenali audiens
3) Kena ikhlas
4) Perhatikan kesannya (sampai atau tidak)

3 Questions to Know If the Man You're With (or Will Be With) Is Bullshit or Authentic

I can't create three questions to know if the woman you're with is authentic or not, but I can - based on experience, observation and as a man myself - tells you how to know if the man you're with is BS or not. Ask these questions:

#1 What makes him angry? Not if he angry or not. If he never gets angry, he's one short of a warrior. Anger shows where his heart is. Anger reveals his innermost desires and attention. When he's angry, does his anger due to what people do to him or to others? Anger at unrighteousness, injustice, and bullies is righteous anger. If his anger is selfish and self-centered, leave him!

#2 What are his 'secret' disciplines? To know this, you need to get into deep with him. Observes how he spend his time, energy and dealing with people. It's not what he said to you, it's what he didn't say to you but leave clues when you observe it intensely. Is he wiser than yesterday, is he more empathetic, is he confess his shortcomings as fast as showing you his strengths? All of these are the product of 'secret' disciplines. If you're a Christian, it means his prayer life, meditating the Word of God and attitude of generosity.

#3 How he uses his money? It's not about how much he earns or paycheck. The most visible way to know what's in a man's (and your) heart is to know where his money goes.

Angelus' Quote: Good Leaders cultivate Honest Speech

Good team leaders never want Yes-men. They need direct and honest communication from their people. But at the same, team members "advisors" need to display respect, too. Leading a team isn't easy (I observe my leaders and myself to know this to be true). It takes hard work. So, communicate directly, honestly and respectfully 😊

Angelus' Quote: Leaders Must Planning for Succession

John C. Maxwell, leadership author, and speaker outlines Three (3) Important Points in Planning for Succession:

#1 PREPARE YOURSELF. Many leaders have a hard time letting go of their leadership positions. Some can't handle it emotionally. Some have not prepared financially. Other have not discussed it with their families. Get yourself ready for the idea.

#2 LOOK FOR SEVERAL POTENTIAL SUCCESSORS. If you are in a position to pick your successor, look for several people with the potential to replace you. Ideally, you would have a pool of people to pick from.

#3 LET THE ORGANIZATION KNOW CHANGE IS ON THE HORIZON. Transitions from one leader to another can be traumatic. Don't spring it on your people. Let them know in plenty of time if it's within your power.

Angelus' Quote: Become An Original Leader

"You become a leader," said late Myles Munroe, "when you decide not to be a copy but an original." I think, a leader does not set out to be a leader per se, but rather to maximize herself fully and freely. True leaders have no interest in themselves or position, but an abiding interest in expressing themselves.

First, you might need to imitate but soon or later you have be an original - original leader 😉

Angelus' Quote: Courage Is Essential to Leadership

Aristotle called courage the first virtue because it makes all of the other virtues possible. Leadership sometimes involves making unpopular decisions which require a certain level of bravery. If you want to be more courageous you need to try new things, have more trust and confidence in others, as well as be able to raise difficult issues that others would leave unresolved 😎

Angelus' Quote: A Leader Is an Average Person

Anne O' Hare McCormick visited Hilter, Mussolini, and Roosevelt and asked all three, "How did you get where you are?"

Mussolini puffed out his chest, as he often did, and replied, "I came!" Hitler got a faraway look in his face and said, "I was sent."

When she asked Roosevelt, he laughed and said, "Well, somebody had to do it!" Because he was motivated to do it, he became a leader 😎

BOOK REVIEW – Crushing It! How Great Entrepreneurs Build Their Business and Influence – and How You Can, Too (2018) by Gary Vaynerchuk

Gary Vaynerchuk or GaryVee, is a Russian-American entrepreneur, author, speaker and internet personality. It’s you’re an entrepreneur (or wanna-be) and active in social media, you’ll know him. In his 2009 international bestseller Crust It!, Gary insisted that a vibrant personal brand was crucial to entrepreneurial success. In Crushing It!, 9 years later, Gary explains why that’s even truer today, offering his unique perspective on what has changed and what principles remain timeless.

How do I know Gary? Through social media, books, and podcasts. How Gary makes a difference in my life? Because of his in-your-face advice and sometimes renegade wisdom, I start again using Instagram again and created a Twitter account to share my materials on leadership, leadership, and creativity – in short, my personal brand. Also, when my blog URL was blocked on Facebook last month, I have to find another way to spread my brand. Wala!? Create videos and share them on YouTube! It’s not because of Gary alone, of course, but one of the cheerleaders is him. So you can see how valuable this book is to me personally.

There are two (2) parts in this book:

Part 1: Get Pumped. Here Gary tells the importance of building your personal brand, turn your passion into profit, eight things that really matter to “Crushing It!” (Namely, 1) Intent, 2) Authenticity, 3) Passion, 4) Patience, 5) Speed, 6) Work, 7) Attention, and 8) Content. I shared briefly in the video), advised his readers to document rather than creating, reveals the reasons what stopping people from “Crushing It!” and a chapter on giving yourself permission to just do it! I’m pumped up after I finished reading this part.

Part 2: Create Your Pillar. Basically, this part is all about practicality. There are three (3) basics thing that you HAVE to do: 1) create a Facebook page; 2) the importance of using hashtags#, and 3) encouragement to collaborate and partner with others. Then he devotes each chapter to explain about Musical.ly, Snapchat, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Podcasts and Voice-First. Worth reading it! Gary also tells the stories at the end of each chapter how others used his timeless principles in “Crush It!” to build their businesses and influence.

BOOK REVIEW: Good Leaders Ask Great Questions (2014) by John C. Maxwell

John C. Maxwell, my long-distant mentor in leadership, writes, “Good leaders ask great questions that inspire others to dream more, think more, learn more, do more, and become more.” That’s exactly what this book had done to me! This book is filled with great questions and good answers. When this book was published, John was 67-year-old. This is the product – the book that every young leader should read – of his 40 years in leadership. Imagine John’s experiences (so far) as a leader, writer, trainer, speaker and mentor crunch into a solid book that can be read like a textbook on leadership 📕📖📚📓📑📓📚

"If you want to be successful and reach your leadership potential,” writes John, “you need to embrace asking questions as a lifestyle.” Why? John Maxwell outlines Eight (8) Values of Questions:

1) You Only Get Answers to the Questions You Ask
2) Questions Unlock and Open Doors that Otherwise Remain Closed
3) Questions Are the Most Effective Means of Connecting with People
4) Questions Cultivate Humility
5) Questions Help You to Engage Others in Conversation
6) Questions Allow Us to Build Better Ideas
7) Questions Give Us a Different Perspective

BOOK REVIEW: The Top 10 Mistakes Leaders Make (2007) by Hans Finzel

In the Introduction, Finzel says: "Leadership can be dangerous. To understand this, study world history and the lives of great and terrible leaders and what they accomplished through others. We who are in leadership can, on one hand, move men, women, and mountains for tremendous good. On the other hand, we hold the power to do irreparable damage to our followers by the mistakes we make.”

From that premise, he lays out ten mistakes that leaders commonly make because they generally "fall into leadership" and "tend to do what comes naturally—we 'wing it'":

Mistake #1: Having a Top-Down Attitude
Mistake #2: Putting Paperwork before Peoplework
Mistake #3: The Absence of Affirmation
Mistake #4: Not Making Room for Mavericks
Mistake #5: Dictatorship in Decision Making
Mistake #6: Dirty Delegation
Mistake #7: Communication Chaos
Mistake #8: Missing the Clues of Corporate Culture
Mistake #9: Success without Successors
Mistake #10: Failure to Focus on the Future

Good Leaders Delegate (Angelus Leadership Video)

Captain America is not the strongest Avengers, but surely - he is a great leader! One of the key characteristics of a good leader is the ability to delegate works and tasks to its team members.

In a well-functioning team, every member has his own strengths and weaknesses; a great leader knows how to leverage his team’s strengths to get the best results. In the final battle scene of The Avengers, Cap designs the plan for fighting the Chitauri alien invasion based on the strengths of each of the Avengers [watches the video clip for my favorite scene 👍💪⚡😁😍]

Good Leaders Are Team Players (Angelus Leadership Video)

Good Leaders Are Team Players. If you watch this MUST WATCH short movie clip, Tony DAmato (played by Al Pacino) in 1999's Any Given Sunday, is giving a speech to his team in the most honest and raw way as possible. As their coach and leader, he inspired them to do their best and commit 100% to the game. As Patricia Fripp, an executive speaking coach, once said, "A team is a group of people who may not be equal in experience, talent, or education but in commitment."

If you are a leader, the true measure of your success is not getting people to work or play the game. It's not getting people to work hard. IT IS getting people, a team to work hard TOGETHER. Be a team player.

The Essence of Leadership Is TRUST (Angelus Leadership Video)

Mother's Day Special: 4 Lessons I Learned about Motherhood from Mary (Short Bible Study)

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY! Share this video and let it be known that MOTHERS ARE SPECIAL IN OUR LIVES.

4 Lessons about Motherhood from Mary, the Mother of Jesus, that I Learned from the Gospel of Luke

#1 Mothers are Afraid but They Do It Anyway (see Luke 1:29-30). "Birth takes a woman's deepest fear about herself and shows her that she is stronger than them."

#2 Mothers can Be Use by the Lord no Matter Who They Are (see Luke 1:34). John MacArthur, author, and Bible teacher writes, "Mother by no means second class. Men may have authority in the home, but the women have the influence. The mother, more than the father, is the one who moulds and shapes those little lives from day one."

#3 Mothers are Always Available to Serve and to Love (see Luke 1:38). Charles Stanley reflects about mothers, "Motherhood is a great honour and privilege, yet it is also synonymous with servanthood. Every day women are called upon to selflessly meet the needs of their families... moms continuously put others before themselves."

#4 Blessed are Mothers Who Believe in God and His Word (see Luke 1:45). Pope Francis once declares: "The Gospel shows us the truest reason for Mary's greatness and her blessedness: It is faith."

Happy Mother's Day! May all the world call you blessed

How to Have An INTIMATE & VIBRANT Relationship with God until Your Old Age Luke 2:25-35 (Short Bible Study)

Read Luke 2:25-35 (NLT):

At that time there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon. He was righteous and devout and was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him and had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. That day the Spirit led him to the Temple. So when Mary and Joseph came to present the baby Jesus to the Lord as the law required, Simeon was there. He took the child in his arms and praised God, saying,

Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace, as you have promised. I have seen your salvation, which you have prepared for all people. He is a light to reveal God to the nations, and he is the glory of your people Israel!”

Jesus’ parents were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby’s mother, “This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, and many others to rise. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him. As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul.”

3 Predetermined Things about Jesus from Luke 2:21-24 (Short Bible Study)

Read Luke 2:21-24 (NLT):

Eight days later, when the baby was circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name given to him by the angel even before he was conceived. Then it was time for their purification offering, as required by the law of Moses after the birth of a child; so his parents took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. The law of the Lord says, "If a woman’s first child is a boy, he must be dedicated to the Lord." So they offered the sacrifice required in the law of the Lord — “either a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons."

3 Predetermined Things about Jesus:

#1 The Name of Jesus - WHO He Is
#2 The Dedication of Jesus - WHY He Came
#3 The Humility of Jesus - HOW He Came

5 Things that Are "Wrong" Around the Birth of Jesus In Luke 2:8-20 (Short Bible Study)

Open Your Bible to Luke 2:8-20 (NIV):

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

5 Things that Are "Wrong" Around the Birth of Jesus In Luke 2:8-20:

#1 Controversial Pregnancy?
#2 King Born in the Manger?
#3 Short Heavenly Announcements?
#4 First Evangelists Were the Shepherd?
