Cults & Isms (1948, 1962) by J. Oswald Sanders, Book Review

This book formerly issued as Heresies and Cults was first published in 1948 and was revised in 1962. Between these years, God not yet formed me in my mother’s womb. This book is old, brownish and a little bit fall apart. But do not despise its look, it is well research (for its time) and a good sum up for modern-day heresies and cults that are still prevalent in Christianity today. Some definitions, Oswald Sanders wrote: “A heretic is ‘one whose errors are doctrinal, and usually of a malignant character, tending to subvert the true faith.’ The word cult means simply a ‘system of religious worship’ but has come to be associated largely with systems of religious worship which are heterodox.” Heterodox means not conforming to accepted or orthodox standards or beliefs. Throughout the book, Mr. Sanders evaluates each cult and heresy with the Scripture but as the basic for confessions of faith, he refers to the Apostles’ Creed.

What makes a cult a cult? And a heresy a heresy? Mr. Sanders observes: “It will be observed that in the following heresies, the touchstone of doctrine is the Person and Work of Christ. This is the rock on which they all split.” Let me share my observations too (based on my studies of cults especially with the help of the late Dr. Walter R. Martin). Most of them generally hold these five (5) views in common:

1) They believe that all (except themselves, of course. Hello world!) Christian churches are wrong and that theirs’ is a special group that has the real truth about God.

2) They attack the deity and/or humanity of Jesus Christ and either lower Him to the level of man or raise man to the level of ‘Christ.’

3) They deny that man can be saved by faith in Jesus Christ alone and teach that man can make himself right with God by good works - and by obeying their teachings.

4) They believe the statements of their leaders who claim to have new revelations and/or new interpretations of the Bible or have the authority above the Bible.

5) They claim to believe the Bible but they distort its teachings to suit their own particular beliefs about God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, man, church, heaven and hell, salvation, and other vital doctrines.

“Now the Spirit expressly says that in the latter times,” reminds the Apostle Paul to Timothy then and to us know, “some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared” (1 Timothy 4:1-2). Years earlier, when Jesus Christ still walks on earth already warned His followers, “See that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name, saying ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray… For false Christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect” (Mark 13:5-6, 22. If you read Mark 13, underlines the words “lead stray” or “to deceive” or “to seduce”). The Apostle Peter recalled Lord Jesus’ warning by saying that there will be false prophets and teachers even among the believers who “will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bring up themselves swift destruction” (2 Peter 2:1). Knowing that there are spirits of Antichrist and heresies that against or counterfeit the Spirit of Truth, the Apostle John counsel us, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world" (1 John 4:1).

In this book, Mr. Sanders examines Roman Catholicism, Spiritism, Christian Science, Unity, Unitarianism, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Theosophy, Christadelphianism, Mormonism (or Latter-Day Saints), Seventh-Day Adventism, British-Israelism, Freemasonry, The Healing Movement, and a summary of other cults. There are two things that we need to keep in mind as we read apologetic books like this: First, the author is fallible, only the Word of God is infallible. Thus, we must examine this book too in the light of the Scripture quotes above. Be like the Bereans, “examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so” (Acts 17:11). And secondly, any false system of cult, since they don’t subscribe to historical and orthodox Christian beliefs, are subject to change and evolution. Therefore, some of the information in this book is irrelevant or outdated. What they believe yesterday can change its meanings today to avoid being [obviously] false. Beware of wordplay. “As we face the modern heresies, and discover that all are astray on one or more aspects of the Person and Work of our Lord, we too must meet the challenge by the intelligent use of ‘the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God,’” writes Mr. Sanders in the closing of the first chapter, “We have been expressly commanded to ‘contend earnestly for the faith once for all delivered to saints,’ and we must be faithful to our trust.” Amen! ������✍

The Jesus Who Never Lived: Exposing False Christs and Finding The Real Jesus (2008) by H. Wayne House, Book Review

Jesus of the Bible once asked His disciples, "Who do people say I am?" and "Who do you say I am?" These questions are very relevant and even more so today. He asks these same questions of us too. But how can anyone know for sure who Jesus is when confronted with so many different views of Him today? Everyone wants a piece of Jesus. You don't hear or read any other great people, prophets, or religious founders contented as much and as heated as Jesus (Have you ever wonder why people want to attack the person of Jesus? Why not other religious leaders?). If Jesus (of the Bible) is the truth, then all other Jesuses must be false or not as accurate as of the real one.

This book is beneficial in identifying false Christs and fake Jesuses from the Biblical Jesus, who is the truth, the life, and the only way to God. Dr. Wayne discusses how the early witnesses such as his family, disciples, the leaders, the Roman and Jewish historians, and the early Church viewed and believed about Jesus. He also highlighted some false Christianities, false messiahs, or alternative christs before and after the death and resurrection of Jesus of the Bible (this is usually referred to as the early heterodox perspectives). I particularly enjoy reading about The Jesus of World Religions, especially from Hinduism, Buddhist, and Islam perspectives, and The Jesus of Media Scholarship that focuses on the efforts of The Jesus Seminar and Bart Ehrman.

Dr. Wayne wrote, "It is doubtful that Christianity would have survived the persecutions of the early centuries or blossomed to its magnitude today apart from belief in the special nature and work of Jesus Christ. Jesus is not merely appreciated for His teachings or respected for His high moral standards. He is worshipped, adored, and obeyed as the sovereign God and creator of the universe, the Saviour of His people." #1Book1Week June 2020

This year I have the surge and desire to reread Christian books :) And what great books they are! Here are my #1Book1Week book lists for June 2020 (to see Jan-May listings, go to https://instagram.com/legasi.tv/):

1) The Cross: Crucified with Christ and Christ Alive In Me (this version, 2019) by J. C. Ryle. Ryle, an English Anglican Bishop, is a wise man of old. I love his expository thoughts on the Gospels. This book used by God to save me from the burden of my sins. So timely and richly Word-centred. "As the sun gazed upon makes everything else look dark and dim," writes Ryle, "so does the cross darken the false splendor of this world." True!

2) Jesus, A Visual History: The Dramatic Story of the Messiah in the Holy Land (2014) by Donald L. Blake Sr. Very scholarly and yet fun to read - a combination (seem rare nowadays) that excites me to explore the topic. This book reminded me of another similar book with colorful pictures, graphics, historical titbits, and Scripture explanations by Stephen Miller's The Jesus of the Bible. I recommend both!

3) The Coming Chinese Church: How Rising Faith In China Is Spilling Over Its Boundaries (2013) by Paul Golf. In the past, the West send missionaries who were willing to sacrifice themselves (even die) to preach the Gospel to the Chinese people. The minorities that become Christians were being persecuted, and just like in the Book of Acts, they strive and prosper during hardship. As they grew in numbers, God moved their hearts to bless other nations, too, by sending missionaries to preach the Gospel back to the West and the rest of the world. They do this to honor their spiritual heritage and driven by the vision that God has called them to, namely, Back to Jerusalem.

4) The Disease of the Health & Wealth Gospels (2006) by Gordon D. Fee. These so-called 'Gospels' or 'Christian' teachings are prevalent and damaging in the Church today. I appreciate this book because of its fair treatment of these controversial themes, and it is based on solid exegesis of the Scripture. Mr. Fee is known for his co-author book, How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth... and true to its title, it is worth reading it.

A. Pengenalan

1)      Jangan hairan: dulu ada cult, sekarang ada cult. “Yang sudah ada akan diadakan lagi, dan yang sudah dibuat akan dibuat lagi. Tiada apa-apa pun yang baru di bawah matahari” (Pengkhutbah 1:9)

2)      Orang Kristian sudah diberi amaran tetang ajaran-ajaran and guru-guru sesat/salah. “Aku tahu bahawa sepeninggalanku nanti, beberapa serigala garang akan masuk menyerang jemaah ini; malah dari antara kamu sendiri akan bangkit beberapa orang yang memesongkan ajaran yang benar dan berusaha menarik para murid untuk mengikuti mereka” (Kisah Para Rasul 20:29-30; 2 Korintus 11:15; Galatia 1:7; 2 Petrus 2:1)

3)      Orang Kristian sepatutnya mempertahankan iman (apologetic). “[Terus] berjuang untuk iman yang telah dikurniakan Allah kepada orang salih-Nya cuma sekali untuk selama-lamanya” (Yudas 3)

4)      Orang Kristian sepatutnya berkongsi tentang iman (evangelistic). "Segala kekuasaan telah diserahkan kepada-Ku, baik di syurga mahupun di bumi. BOleh itu pergilah, jadikan semua bangsa murid-Ku. Baptislah mereka dengan nama Bapa, Anak dan Roh Kudus. Ajarlah mereka supaya taat akan segala perkara yang telah Kuperintahkan kepadamu. Aku akan sentiasa bersamamu, hingga ke akhir zaman" (Matius 28:18-20)

5)      Gereja harus memelihara kebenaran Allah. Gereja ialah “jemaah Allah yang hidup, tiang dan asas kebenaran” (1 Timotius 3:15)

6)      Iblis pula tidak menyukai kebenaran Allah. “[Iblis] pembunuh. Dia tidak menyokong kebenaran, kerana dalam dirinya tidak ada kebenaran… dia pendusta dan bapa segala dusta” (Yohanes 8:44)

B. Maksud Cult

Menurut Got Questions BM laman web, definasi Kristian yang khusus bagi sebuah ‘kultus’ adalah “sebuah kumpulan agama yang telah menyangkal satu atau lebih kebenaran Alkitab yang asas” tetapi masih mengaku sebagai sebagai orang Kristian.

Perbezaan diantara cult dan agama lain ialah:

Cult	Agama Lain (contoh Islam, ajaran Buddha, Hindu dan sebagainya)
Tidak menyangkal ‘Yesus’ secara terang-terang	Memang tidak melihat Yesus sebagai seorang ilahi atau setara dengan TUHAN
Percaya bahawa Yesus ialah seorang yang luar biasa	Percaya bahawa Yesus ialah salah seorang nabi atau guru baik atau manusia yang beriman
Menggunakan istilah ‘Kristian’ tetapi berbeza definasi atau menyimpang maksudnya	Kebanyakannya menyangkal atau berbeza dengan doktrin-doktrin Kristian
Menggunakan Alkitab dan mempunyai kitab-kitab tambahan sendiri	Mempunyai Kitab-Kitab agama sendiri
Selalunya berpusat kepada seorang pemimpin/guru/nabi/rasul utama yang mempunyai kuasa mutlak	Selalunya mempunyai lebih daripada seorang pemimpin/guru, ada sedikit ciri-ciri cult tetapi secara amnya ia umum dan para pengikut bebas melakukan hal-hal agama
Agak susah untuk dikenalpasti  (contoh: iPhone original vs iPhone tiruan)	Agak senang untuk dikenalpasti (contoh: iPhone vs Xiaomi)
Perbezaan yang paling ketara ialah cult mengaku bahawa mereka ‘Kristian’ padahal bukan, tetapi agama lain tidak mengaku mereka sebagai pengikut Kristus!*

*Walaubagaimanapun, suatu masa dulu di Malaysia ada sekumpulan muslim menggunakan t-shirt “I am a Muslim and I Follow Jesus. Ask Me Why?” dan mengedarkan buku Jesus: Man, Messenger, Messiah dengan bertujuan untuk memancing pengikut Kristus

Jadi, bagi saya cult bermaksud sebuah pergerakan agama yang ada menyebut/berpusat kepada Kristus dan Alkitab tetapi memutar-belitkan maksud dan doktrin/teologi Kristian Ortodoks – Kristian Perjanjian Baru – dengan: 

a)  Penambahan wahyu-wahyu

b)  Menukar kenyataan iman (Creed) yang utama kepada yang baru

Cult selalunya akan menyangkal keilahian Yesus Kristus (“Yesus bukan Tuhan”) dan doktrin Triniti 

C. Bagaimana Untuk Mengenalpasti Ajaran Cult

Salah satu cara ialah dengan menggunakan akronim, B.I.T.E. iaitu:

> Behaviour Control 

> Information Control

> Thought Control 

> Emotion Control

Kaedah B.I.T.E. sesuai digunakan untuk menilai cult dari segi psikologi dan luaran tetapi ia kurang dari segi pandangan doktrin/teologi Kristian

 Ada satu kaedah yang paling berkesan untuk mengenalpasti cult menurut doktrin/teologi Kristian Ortodoks iaitu Kaedah Matematik:

#2 Tolak (-)	Menolak Doktrin Triniti terutamanya Kemanusiaan dan Keilahian Yesus Kristus

#4 Bahagi (/)	Membahagikan Kesetiaan Para Pengikut dari TUHAN yang benar dan Gereja-Nya

Untuk tujuan kita mengenalpasti cult dengan menggunakan Kaedah Matematik, saya hanya akan menggunakan tiga (3) contoh cult yang popular di Sarawak:

1)  Cult Jehovah’s Witnesses 

2)  Cult Mormon (atau Latter-day Saints)

3)  Cult World Mission Society Church of God (WMSCG) @ Allah Ibu

#1 Tambah (+): Menokok Tambah Alkitab 

a)      Selepas kedatangan Yesus Kristus dalam Perjanjian Baru, kita tidak memerlukan wahyu-wahyu atau nabi-nabi baru untuk menyatakan kebenaran Allah. Ibrani 11-2 mengatakan: “Allah telah berfirman pada pelbagai zaman dan dengan aneka cara kepada nenek moyang kita melalui nabi-nabi. Tetapi pada akhir zaman ini Allah telah berfirman kepada kita melalui Anak-Nya, yang telah dijadikan-Nya pewaris kepada segala-galanya; melalui Anak-Nya itu Allah telah mencipta alam semesta.” 

b)      Kitab Wahyu – dan juga seluruh Alkitab (66 buku-buku) – tidak boleh ditambah atau ditolak sebarangan. Wahyu 22:18-19, “Aku bersaksi kepada setiap orang yang mendengar nubuat di dalam kitab ini, bahawa jika sesiapa menambahkan apa-apa kepadanya, Allah akan menambahkan bahaginya segala wabak yang tersurat dalam kitab ini. Dan jika sesiapa menggugurkan sepatah kata pun daripada nubuat ini, Allah akan menggugurkan bahagiannya daripada pokok hayat dan kota suci seperti yang tersurat dalam kitab ini.”

c)      Apa cult lakukan kepada Alkitab?

> Deny (menyangkal) keaslian dan authoriti Alkitab

> Change (mengubah) terjermahan Alkitab, mengubah tema/perkataan

> Interpretation (tafsiran) tafsiran berlainan, tafsiran yang menyimpang

Pengasas	Yesus Kristus (SM3033). Pengikut Kristus dipanggil sebagai Kristian	Charles Taze Russell (18521916) kemudian Joseph F. Rutherford (1869-1942). Bermula pada tahun 1879 di Pennsylvania. Berpusat di Brooklyn, New York	Joseph Smith, Jr. (1805- 1844) menubuhkan Gereja Yesus Kristus dari Orang-Orang Suci Zaman Akhir pada 1830 di New York. #2 Tolak (-): Menolak Doktrin Triniti

a)      Istilah “triniti” tidak ada di dalam Alkitab tetapi konsep triniti sangat nyata! 

b)      Konsep Triniti atau Tritunggal menyatakan bahawa hanya ada satu TUHAN tetapi ada tiga peribadi iaitu: Allah Bapa, Allah Anak dan Roh Kudus

c)      Allah Tritunggal TIDAK bermaksud:

> 1 TUHAN dalam 3 Tuhan-tuhan

> 3 Peribadi dalam 1 Peribadi

> 3 Peribadi dalam 3 Tuhan-tuhan

> 1 Peribadi dalam 3 Tuhan-tuhan

TETAPI

> 1 TUHAN dalam 3 Peribadi

> BUKAN 1 + 1 + 1 = 3, TETAPI 1 x 1 x 1= 1

2)  Menerima hormat dan penyembahan yang hanya diberikan kepada Allah (Matius 14:33)

3)  Mengatakan bahawa Dia setara dengan TUHAN iaitu Anak Allah (Yohanes 5:17-18) …dan banyak lagi

f)       Perbezaan

Siapa Yesus?	Jesus ialah TUHAN, salah seorang peribadi dalam Allah Tritunggal	Yesus bukan TUHAN. Dia ialah penghulu malaikat, Michael. TUHAN mencipta segala sesuatu melalui dia. Dia hidup di bumi dengan sempurna. Tidak mati di kayu salib, tetapi tiang. Dia bangkit sebagai roh dan tubuhnya sudah hancur/tiada. Yesus sudah kembali pada tahun 1914 sebagai roh	Jesus tidak sama dengan Allah Bapa (Elohim). Dia diciptakan dan merupakan ‘anak sulung’ bagi semua manusia dan roh. Yesus ‘dilahirkan’ melalui hubungan seks diantara Elohim dan Maria. Yesus pernah berkahwin.	TUHAN itu satu (theisme, bukan Triniti). Dalam Perjanjian Lama, Tuhan dipanggil Yahweh @ Jehovah. Dalam Perjanjian Baru, dia datang sebagai Yesus; Sekarang, pada akhir zaman, dia datang sebagai Kristus Ahn Sahng-hong. #3 Darab (x): Menggandakan Pekerjaan untuk Kesalamatan

a)      Hati manusia itu licik. Jeremia 17:9, “Hati itu licik melebihi segala sesuatu, bahkan sangat parah – siapa dapat mengetahuinya?”

b)      Semua manusia berdoa. Roma 3:23, “[Semua] manusia telah berdosa dan tidak dapat mencapai kemuliaan Allah.” 

c)      Manusia tidak boleh mendapat keselamatan melalui pekerjaan atau dengan melakukan Hukum Taurat. Yakobus 2:10, “Melanggar satu perintah Taurat bererti melanggar seluruh hukum…” 

d)      Cult menolak dan tidak percaya kepada doktrin kerusakan (depravity) manusia, Oleh itu, mereka suka menggandakan pekerjaan manusia bersama dengan kasih kurnia Allah

e)      HANYA ada Dua (2) Cara untuk Diselamatkan:

1)  “[Dengan] kasih kurnia-Nya melalui iman” (Efesus 2:8)

2)  Dengan mentaai Hukum Taurat sepenuhnya, dengan sempurna dan segenap hati. Ini mustahil!

Doktrin keselamatan	> Dengan kasih kurnia Allah > melalui iman  > Kematian dan kebangkitan Yesus telah membolehkan kita diselamatkan > Pekerjaan/ perbuatan baik ialah hasil/ kesan dari keselamatan Allah	> Harus dibaptiskan sebagai pengikut > Memperolehi ‘hidup’ melalui penginjilan dari rumah-ke-rumah > Percaya bahawa 144,000 orang yang diurapi sahaja yang masuk syurga	> Orang yang percaya akan dibangkitkan melalui kasih kurnia tetapi diselamatkan (kepada keilahian atau menjadi ilahi) melalui pekerjaan seperti taat kepada pemimpin/ penatua gereja LDS,  baptis, persepuluhan, ritual rahsia gereja (temple) dan sebagainya	> kurang jelas, perlu menyiasat lagi > yang jelas ialah: langkah pertama dalam keselamatan ialah melalui baptisan dan jika kamu keluar dari ‘gereja’ mereka, maka, keselamatan kamu juga akan ‘hilang’

#4 Bahagi (/): Membahagikan Kesetiaan Para Pengikut 

a)      Dalam setiap cult hampir semua ada pemimpin/nabi/rasul yang mempunyai ‘kunci’ rahsia yang diberikan kepada mereka. Contoh,

> Wahyu baru – samada melalui ‘Tuhan’ atau malaikat

> Kitab atau Buku yang lebih autoritatif daripada Alkitab 

> Hanya terjemahan mereka yang betul/benar/suci

> Hanya kepercayaan/gereja mereka sahaja yang betul 

> harus setia kepada para pemimpin (atau individu), gereja dan organisasi (tidak semestinya kepada TUHAN dan Firman Allah)

b)      Antara Ajaran-Ajaran yang Pelik

“Memikul beban berat…” (Matius 11:28)

> Perjumpaan di “Kingdom Halls” bukan gereja > Perjamuan hanya dilakukan sekali setahun & hanya orang yang diurapi* sahaja yang dibenarkan terlibat > Tidak menyambut perayaan atau hari jadi > Dilarang untuk mengundi, tabik kepada bendera, menjadi askar, atau mengambil/ menerima darah	> Tidak boleh minum arak, kopi dan teh > boleh dibaptis sebagai pihak orang yang sudah mati > digalakan untuk melayani sebagai penginjil selama 2 tahun > rahsia ritual di ‘temple’ hanya bagi orang yang layak sahaja	> Yesus sudah datang semula (second coming) sebagai Ahn Sahng-hong > Allah ada 2 iaitu Allah Bapa dan Allah Ibu > menyambut hari Sabat tetapi konsep mereka berbeza dengan ajaran Yahudi > menyambut 7 perayaan seperti dalam Imamat 23 > Tidak boleh meninggalkan gereja WMSCG dan tidak boleh pergi ke gereja lain (sesat)
