I once read the English writer Samuel Crowther wrote an article in which he examined the traits of many successful people. “The only common trait that can be discovered among them,” he wrote, “has to do with the capacity for sustained work in an emergency. Someone has said that the chief difference between a big man and a little man is that the little man quits when he is tired and sleepy, while that is the big man presses on harder than ever”.
Along the same lines, another author wrote, “The longer I live the more deeply I am convinced that the difference between one person and another, between the weak and the powerful, the great and insignificant, is energy – invincible determination. This quality will do anything that has to be done in the world; and no talents, no circumstances, no opportunities, will make one a successful person without it”
Though quotes above are referring to how successful people persevere in their works and businesses generally (The Scripture doesn’t teach us to be a successful person but to be a godly person) – the need for endurance and perseverance are indispensable for men and women of God not just in our faith in Him but in everything we do.
It is said that our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising everytime we fall. Problems, trails, troubles and testing can either strengthen you or break you. It all depends on your attitude toward it. If you see your problems as stepping stones to become stronger, you can move ahead with God’s promises for what He wants you to become – a person of solid character who can handle any obstacle by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Scripture affirmed it: “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing” (James 1:2-4, NLT)
I'm not a follower of Confucius but like his common sense. |
Do you feel like giving up today? Are you tired and sleepy? Do you feel like a little man and weak? Keep on persevere! Never give up! Have that “capacity for sustained work in an emergency”; that “energy – invincible determination”. Remember: if you’re in Christ, know that God Himself never stops working in you, and that should motivate you to always be looking for what He will do next to help you grow. Ronald A. Beers writes, “The fuel of endurance for life is the power of God working in you… God’s power will strengthen and ignite your ability to keep on keeping on – not just to endure but to persevere joyfully!”
THINK BIG. START SMALL. GO DEEP.
