Week 34: Time – Busy doing Nothing?

William Penn once said, ‘Time is what we want most, but what we use worst.’ Take an inventory of your day. Be honest. How much time is wasted on television or social networking sites or busy work that doesn’t really impact your bottom line? It is really we don’t have time or ‘simply because we are caught up in laziness’ as Kong Yeng Phooi elder in my Church puts it this morning.

You time is priceless. Everyone have 24 hours or 1,440 minutes in a day regardless or your gender or status. There is really no such thing as lack of time. Everyone has sufficient time to do what has to be done, at least the most important things that really matter. You probably, like I do, know people who appear even less busy than you yet are able to accomplish much more. It’s not about having more time, but to use time that is available to better advantage.

Let us put time in proper perspective:
To know the value of one year… ask the student who failed the final exam.
To know the value of one month… ask the mother of a premature baby.
To know the value of one week… ask the editor of a weekly news-magazine.
To know the value of one day… ask the wage earner who has six children.
To know the value of one hour… ask the lovers who are waiting to meet.
To know the value of one minute… ask the person who missed the plane.
To know the value of one second… ask the person who survived the accident.
To know the value of one millisecond… ask the Olympic silver medalist.

Here are some of my ways to eliminate time wasters whenever I recognize that I’m busy doing nothing. At first it was hard to follow but as time goes by, with a little push and discipline, soon or later it’ll became your habits.
  • Doing what are important rather than urgent. Organize your schedule each day to spend the majority of it doing things that are important. This is especially difficult for me because I’m more on doing things spontaneously rather than organize, but there’s something that we cannot take for granted.
  • Stay away from distractions and interruptions: some interruptions are unavoidable, but often they caused by people just dropping in to chat. Chat at the proper time. Watching television, log in to facebook and twitter or reading newspaper in the midst of doing important thing is forbidden.
  • Break your goal down into pieces. Stop trying to do everything all at once. (“Sikit-sikit lama-lama jadi bukit”)
  • Learn not to put things off a.k.a. avoid procrastination. Oftentimes taking immediate action is better than pushing decisions off until a later day. It may result in extra work later.
  • Do not worry. Worry is one of the greatest time wasters. Faith and action will eliminate most worries. Remember, worry is a choice.
  • Pray and ask God to help you to use time properly by doing what is requiring for the day. Pray with all your heart and eager to listen to His voice every morning. (If you honestly doing it and nothing changed, leave a comment here and I’ll delete this point immediately.)

Time is a lot like battery energy – you rarely know how much is left until it’s gone. With time, you cannot buy more or borrow some from someone else, unlike battery. That is why time is so valuable, and yet most of us live as if it means very little. God does not ask you to do everything, just everything he has call you to do, and he assures you that there is time for whatever it is.

Do not waste your time and busy doing nothing without any sense of purpose. Here you go; I talk about purpose over and over again in most of my notes in this blog - Important point worth repeating over and over again. Divine Moments: Everyday inspiration from God’s Word summaries it well. With permission I quotes: ‘The more you invest in discovering the purpose for which God created you and how to live out that purpose with obedience and responsibility, the more meaningful and significant your time on earth will become.’

Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom. (Psalms 90:12)
