When I read the Scripture,
the phrase "the fear of the Lord" occurs over and over again. In the
Old Testament alone, there are more than 300 references that speak of the fear
of the Lord. What is the fear of God? It means, simply put, reverential trust
and respect and hatred of evil.
A.W. Tozer, in his classic
book Whatever Happened to Worship,
explains it better: "The fear of God
is... astonishing reverence. I believe that the reverential fear of God mixed
with love and fascination and astonishment and admiration and devotion is the
most enjoyable state and the most satisfying emotion the human soul can know."
