The Real Christ: Reevaluating How We See Jesus, According to Scripture (1920, 2020, audiobook) by Reuben A. Torrey, Book Review

Any book by the late R. A. Torrey is worth reading and listening to. Like Charles Spurgeon said about John Bunyan, "His blood is Bibline," meaning to say read anything of his, and you will see that it is almost like reading the Bible itself. In this book, Mr. Torrey desires to portray the real Christ, the Christ of actual fact, in all of His many characteristics and complete love, holiness, zeal, and glory. That portrait is from God’s own Word, the Bible. My favorite chapter is Chapter 8: His Manliness. Here are some quotes that I would like to highlight:

"While Christ was more gentle than the gentlest
mother, He was at the same time the strongest and most vigorous of all the sons of men."

"To be a true follower of Jesus, one must be a fearless fighter as well as a gentle comforter."

"Remember, meekness is not weakness, and humility is not servility."

"The manliness of our Lord Jesus was manifested in His unhesitating acceptance of torture and agony in order to save others from suffering and ruin, rather than yielding one iota of the truth. Our Lord Jesus could have escaped the cross if He had been willing to compromise with the religious rulers of the day who oppressed the masses. Yes, He could have escaped easily, but He would not. He pursued the path of absolute allegiance to God and His truth though the cross loomed black and threatening in the path. He did not deviate one step in order to avoid the cross."

Chapters on
His Holiness and His Prayerfulness are also very good - and challenging. As I said earlier, any book by R. A. Torrey is worth reading and listening to. Biblical Manhood #10 Manage Anger Well

Anger can play a significant role in all of our lives. With men in particular, though, anger tends to be a major battlefield. And for men who have families and even loved one, anger is too often directed toward the very people that men are called to protect. "A man (or a leader)," said Paul to Timothy, "must not be violent" (1 Timothy 3:3) ✔📖⚡ #ServeToLead #BiblicalManhood #ManageAngerWell

Biblical Manhood #9 Not An Alcoholic Man

A leader or a man "must not be a heavy drinker" (1 Timothy 3:3). Some translations put it as "not drink too much wine"; "not addicted to wine"; "not given to wine." All of this is to say that a real man is not an alcoholic or a drunkard. I used to be one, so I know what people in my culture might think: "If you're a real man, drink!" No more! ✋Biblical manhood doesn't depend on people's expectations but based on Kingdom values 😉⚡💪 #ServeToLead #BiblicalManhood

Biblical Manhood #8 Be Able To Teach

It is not surprising for a man to be "able to teach" (1 Timothy 3:2). As a teacher, he needs to teach the students. As a father, teach the children. As a pastor, teach the people. But it is more than just talking or lecturing or communicating. At least there are three (3) points to explain what does it mean to be able to teach 😉⚡📖 #ServeToLead

Biblical Manhood #7 Generous Giver

A man must be "hospitable" (1Timothy 3:2). The Greek word philoxenos, where the word hospital comes from, means 'given to hospitality' or 'lover of hospitality.' Or as I put it: to be generous and caring for others. Why is this characteristic or quality is very important especially for a man? Well, watch the video to learn! 😉⚡💪 #ServeToLead

Biblical Manhood #6 A Respectable Man

One of the qualifications of an elder in 1 Timothy 3:2 or (as I'm using it) of Biblical manhood is to be a "respectable" man. To me, a respectable man is someone who makes the teachings and the Gospel of Jesus Christ attractive in every way. It is quite a high calling but necessary. To be respectable, you need to:

> Be A Man of Principle
> Be A Man of Character
> Be A Vulnerable* Man

Biblical Manhood #5 Live Wisely

A man must "live wisely" (1 Timothy 3:2). For this series, I'm using New Living Translation. I love this characteristic - "live wisely." To be wise is NOT just to have head-knowledge (although it is important!). BUT also, especially, to live life wisely or another way to say it, to display or demonstrate wisdom 😉⚡📖 #ServeToLead #LiveWisely #DemonstrateWisdom #LEGASIManhood

Biblical Manhood #4 Must Exercise Self-Control (Part 2)

In the previous video, I said that the fourth characteristic of Biblical manhood is that we must exercise self-control. Here I would like to extend this point by sharing three essential areas that we - as a man - must take care of:

a) Spiritual Stability
b) Emotional Stability
c) Psychological Stability

Biblical Manhood #4 Must Exercise Self-Control (Part 1)

Paul writes to Timothy on how to choose leaders in the church (and I'm using it for Biblical manhood), one of the characters is that "[he] must exercise self-control..." (1 Timothy 3:2). To have self-control means to be ''sensible' and/or 'disciplined.' What does it mean for a man to exercise self-control? 😉⚡📖 #ServeToLead #GodlyMan #MustExerciseSelfControl #LEGASIManhood

Biblical Manhood #3 Must Be A Faithful Man

The storyline in most Malaysian drama is predictable: a husband cheated on his wife or ex-girl/boyfriend wanted to break down the marriage. The reality too is very disturbing, have you not heard at least one story about a 'Christian' husband who is unfaithful to his wife? 1 Timothy 3:2 says, "[A man] must be faithful to his wife." Oh, let's not forget single men. This verse also a reminder to be a faithful man! 😉💪⚡ #ServeToLead #BiblicalManhood #BeAFaithfulMan #LEGASIManhood

Biblical Manhood #2 Having A Good Reputation

Paul said to Timothy, "An elder [or a leader] must be a man whose life is above reproach" (1 Timothy 3:2). To be 'above reproach' also mean to 'be blameless' or 'well respected' or what I like to put it: to have a good reputation. As a man, I really think that having a good reputation is very crucial especially in the age of social media today 😉⚡💪 #ServeToLead #BiblicalManhood #WellRespected #AManWithGoodReputation #LEGASIManhood

Biblical Manhood #1 Becoming A Leader

How to be a man of God? What are the characteristics of a man? What is Biblical manhood? In this video and videos to come, I want to explore these questions particularly from 1 Timothy 3:1-7 📖 Now first and most important: a man must become a leader. "If someone aspires to be an elder [or a leader], he desires an honorable position" (1 Timothy 3:1) 😉⚡🤛 #ServeToLead #BiblicalManhood #SpiritualLeader #LEGASIManhood

5 Vital Characteristics of a Man by Albert R. Macewell

Ramai ❌

#1Book1Week Lists January 2020

"Every person who knows how to read has it in his power to magnify himself," said Aldous Huxley, "...to make his life full, significant and interesting" 😊 January was a busy month for me as I slowly (maybe 'slow' is not the right word, neither 'fast', so) continue the joyful vocation after Sabbatical leave last year 🤫 But since reading has become my habit and part of my life, even in the midst of busy schedule I will find time to read books. More accurately, intentionally "allocate" time to read! Here are my #1Book1Week January 2020:

1) The Fear of the Lord: Discover the Key to Intimately Knowing God (1997) by John Bevere

2) Studies in the Sermon on the Mount (1984) by Martyn Lloyd-Jones [finally finished after a few months of slower reading]

3) The Heart of a Tender Warrior: Becoming a Man of Purpose (2002) by Stu Weber

4) Start! - The Bible for New Believers: New Testament (NKJV) selected books/letters

Angelus' Quote: The Undisciplined Man Is a Slave to His Own Weaknesses

One of the reasons I want to keep fit is as a man, I believe, I shouldn't seek to fight but I must be ready and expect to fight if the situation requires me to do so. To be a man of God is to be humble but not cowardice. It takes discipline to be fit.

In the same way, it takes self-discipline to become a game-changer as a man. And that self-discipline is fueled by your expectations. If you are tired of being tired... if you are frustrated with your spiritual life... if you can't stop your addiction... you should forget about working on self-discipline. First, you must come to grip with your expectations.

What do you expect of yourself? Ask God to help you see the man He sees. To be the best version of the man God built you to be, you must expect to be that man. It will set the course of your discipline and drive your desired behavior 🔥💪😉 #ServeToLead #Manhood

Angelus' Quote: As Iron Sharpens Iron, So Men Sharpens Another

Evil loves to isolate men, to cut them off from their friends, and beg them to keep secrets. A Christian man must be accountable in order to find strength and grow. When I went into trouble, the first person I tell is my boss and brother, David. After that, I shared with Steven during our men's outing. I love it during Bible studies too when men share their thoughts and stories - and get to pray together (now, added that with sisters in Christ. Awesome!).

Alone, we grow dull - but together - we sharpen our skills, fortify our resolve, and refine our battle skills. Men, if you read this, get into a small group - immediately. Lock arms with warriors, and sharpen one another with victories and accountability 💪😉🔥 #ServeToLead #BiblicalManhood

Angelus' Quote: Pride will Kill a Man

Pride will kill a man... Trust me, I know. I went to prison because of it 😬 Pride is hard to detect in ourselves. Others can see it in us, but we have difficulty detecting it. If you have good friends, ask them to comment on you. Usually, they will be honest if you're sincere. What makes pride dangerous is that it creates a false reflection in the mirror.

Humility is the answer. The key to biblical humility is to allow your thoughts to come under the teaching and control of Christ (read Philippians 2). Allow your attitude and behavior to be formed by the direction of God's spirit, not your own. Humility is the cure to pride - and it begins on your knees in prayer. How wonderful if a man falls in front of his King! 😉🔥📖 #ServeToLead #Manhood

Angelus' Quote: What Makes You Come Alive?

John Eldredge asks, "What is written in your heart? What makes you come alive? If you could do what you’ve always wanted to do, what would it be? You see, a man’s calling is written on his true heart, and he discovers it when he enters the frontier of his deep desires." So, don’t ask yourself what the world needs, ask yourself what makes you come alive, because what the world needs are men who have come alive. Men, ask yourself hard questions.
