Sadhu Sundar Singh found Jesus

“For by grace you have been saved through faith.

Have you heard an Indian man by the name of Sadhu Sundar Singh? If you’re a biographer’s readers or familiar with Christian heroes of faith, I’m sure you have read something about his amazing testimonies on how he became a Christian. He was an angry young man. After his mother died when he was 14 years old, he became a fierce opponent of Christianity in his northern India community. But then (to cut the story short), in a dramatic conversion, he turned in faith to Jesus Christ. For the next 25 years he exerted a far-reaching, international influence.

Once he was visited by a professor of comparative religions from Europe. When that agnostic scholar asked Singh with curiosity, “What have you found in Christianity that you did not find in your traditional religion?”

Singh replied, “I found Jesus”.

“Yes, I know,” the professor said impatiently. “But what particular teaching or doctrine did you find?”

Singh simply repeated his answer, “I found Jesus”.

Singh later wrote, “When people ask me, ‘What made you a Christian?’ I can only say, ‘Christ Himself made me a Christian’. When He revealed Himself to me, I saw His glory and was convinced that He is the living Christ.”

His conversion story makes me think about how we became Christian. It was because of God’s grace that He had revealed Himself to us. Grace is God’s special favor freely given to undeserving sinful people. It was because of God’s goodness that He exhibits His glory to us so that we can have our deepest joy in Him. John Piper writes, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him”. It was because of God’s Spirit conviction that we’re confident that He is the living Christ. We have received the Holy Spirit so we can know – by faith, not by sight – that our Lord Jesus Christ that we trust in is a Living Christ. Like Sundar Singh, we all Christian, true Christ followers; are saved by God’s grace, had experienced God’s goodness and received God’s Spirit. What is more privilege than that truth? What can be more joyful to have ‘found Jesus’? Praise God! Praise God! All God’s saints – praise God!
