Unattractive Abby in Chicken Little movie. |
You and Me
Look at the mirror for few seconds [5, 4, 3, 2, 1… tat!] Now come back here again. Questions: Who do you see? Easy, You! Of course. What do you see? Now, that’s a tricky question or at least, a challenging one. You probably see a beautiful young lady or a handsome masculine guy. But for most of us, the truth been told (fact) that we’re not that attractive – somewhere, somehow there's flaws. Pimples invaded your face, hair loss (my problem though~), big nose, weird eyebrows, Star Wars Yoda’s ears, sloppy eyes and _____ [fill the blank]
Depressed? Please don’t. Gives up? Not necessarily, some you can do something about it. Feel useless because you’re not attractive? In the face of the world? Maybe.
In the presence of God? Never!
In the presence of God? Never!
Apostle Paul
This morning as I read supplement books about Paul besides the Book of Acts, I found out that Apostle Paul, the world greatest evangelist after Jesus, was an unattractive guy. He was not a pretty sight to look at. Paul was bald-headed (Anyone?), bow-legged, short man (Paul means ‘small’ or ‘little’. For average Asians men and women – we’re short. Again, fact!), honking big nose (like Parrot), and have a long eyebrow that lay on his forehead like a caterpillar – so this was what church leader in the late AD 100s writes. Unattractive you know.
If you read Paul’s ministry carefully, you’ll find that his physically appearance doesn’t hindrance his passion for Christ at all.
Jesus
Jesus, the Son of God, doesn’t look anything like a movie star or political leader. He was plain and ordinary. I hate (in a holy hatred, if you know what I mean) when someone paint or posted Jesus’ face like a good-smooth-looking rock star with a silky-blond-wind-flow hair style. He was anything like that! If you don’t believe me, read Isaiah 53.
“…he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.” (v.2)
Unattractive you know. Plain, simple and ordinary.
If you read Jesus’ live carefully, you’ll see that his God-in-the-flesh appearance is not the reason people comes to Him. They we were attracted instead toward his spiritual appearance. They saw the Light of God’s Love and Truth shine on him. They, those who believe, experienced the Father in him. They witnessed the work of the Holy Spirit in his life.
Do you know what Jesus, the Son of God sees in the Calvary?
The ugly and shameful plain wooden Cross…
He bore God’s wrath, that’s our sins on His body… that’s unattractive sight you know.
Oh how true and joyful to know that in 1 Samuel 16:7, God says, “People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Again... You’re unattractive in the present of God? Never!
THINK BIG. START SMALL. GO DEEP.
