Every Moment, Thank God

“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise:
be thankful unto him, and bless his name.” (Psalms 100:4KJV)

“Get on your knees and thank God you’re on your feet.” (Irish proverb)

There is a legend of a man who found the barn where Satan kept his seeds ready to be sown in the human heart, and on finding the seeds of discouragement more numerous than others, learned that those seeds could be made to grow almost anywhere. When Satan was questioned he reluctantly admitted that there was one place in which he could never get them to thrive.

“And where is that?” asked the man.

Satan replied sadly, “In the heart of a grateful man.”

This is a legend, but Satan is not – he’s real! And he works overtime 24-7 to get us discourage throughout our lives. [On the other hand: Be careful of quick-easy-scheme of instant promises of happiness that begin with superficial encouragements without deep examine of the heart.] This story probably never happened but its gem of truth is real: that the seed of discouragement couldn’t grow in the heart of a grateful man. “Gratitude,” writes Melody Beattie “unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.”

Here is our object of gratefulness: God. Here is why we should be grateful: God. Here is our enjoyment with which our soul can be satisfied: God. Don’t be grateful for something, but be grateful to someone, mainly God, for the blessings you are given. Yes, even for the blessings to come! Gratefulness for something doesn’t satisfy the heart – no! Car will rust, food will rotten, house will collapse, youthfulness not forever – be grateful, express your gratitude instead to some-One whom can makes your heart full, satisfied, and contented. Be grateful!
