Letter to Elizabeth

Dear Elizabeth,

How are you today friend? Okay, that question is inappropriate to ask but nonetheless – I do really care about you. I heard about your story. I know you’re hurting right now. You don’t deserve this. No one does. He should have treated you better. You have sacrifices a lot, and I witnesses how faithful you’re in this relationship. You’re beautiful but that is not a valid reason that he should love you; he should appreciate your inner love for what is truly beauty – your love for the Lord. And because of that origin, the fountain of truth, out of where your love for him flows, you simply love him purely and unconditional. You don’t care about his past, you say no words about his background and you have patiently endured his weaknesses. It is rightly so. But he doesn’t see this wonderful thing about you; he doesn’t care. That’s why he have no guilt when he rejected your love, betrayed your trust and leaving you alone like this.

Elizabeth, my friend, don’t be sad for long. I won’t stop you from crying. I won’t advice you not to grief. You need it but don’t overdo it. Let it all out but don’t add oil in it. Sometime you need to acknowledge that what had happened is happening now. Faced the “unsettle business” of the past today is better than letting it all become cancer in the future… so that you can move forward [pause].

Do you feel much better now? You know, to tell you the truth, I have nothing much to say to you. If I were a cat, I would rub my furs on your face. If I were a bird, I would sing a joyful song to you. If I were a teddy bear, I would wipe your tear away. But I obviously not one of it – I’m a human-friend. And as a friend who understands how you’re feeling right now, the gift of silent and little words of comfort might be helpful for you. Would you mind if I share some words here? I promise I won’t let you fall asleep.

Elizabeth, look to Jesus. Focus your whole attention toward Him. He will never abandon you – not even one millisecond of your life. To abandon you when you’re feeling sad and broken, God would have to stop loving you, and He simply cannot do that, not for His own people – for He is love. Although He does not promise to remove your pain, God does promise to be with you in it, to get through with you in your problems and difficulties, and to give you hope and purpose in the despair of your aching heart and soul. Look to Jesus. He was betrayed, rejected and alone – and understand now, He have overcome it ALL. He can help you to get through your ‘dark night of the soul’ if you only trust Him. Your hope is in Him alone. Your future is in His Hand. He is your God. Would you trust Him?

Look to Jesus, the bright Light of Heaven. Be so blinded by Him that you can only see His light shine upon you and all things are but shadows in His presence.

Look to Jesus, my friend. I pray you well. See you soon.

Joshua Harris on Prophet Jeremiah and the Bible

Joshua Harris is not only a dating-love-relationship writer. He is a serious student of the Bible and he loves Theology. I recommend you his latest book “Dug Down Deep: Unearthing What I Believe and Why It Matters” (Colorado: Multnomah Books, 2010). Below are long passages of his writing taken from this book… I quote him without permission. This is wrong. P.s: Would you defend me Pastor Harris if the publisher sues me? Mercy.

Eating God’s Word. It’s an odd picture. Yet that’s what the prophet Jeremiah describes when he says to God, “Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O LORD, God of hosts” (Jeremiah 15:16).

When I read these words, I imagine someone tearing out the crinkly, tissue-thin pages of a Bible and stuffing them in his mouth. Of course I know Jeremiah is speaking metaphorically. He’s describing his wholehearted embrace of God’s Word. We should have the same appetite.

That’s how I want to be. But I still have a long way to go. I do love God’s Word. I’ve tasted that it’s good. But sometimes I only nibble on it. Sometimes I don’t feel like eating at all. I want to delight in it the way Jeremiah describes. I want to be hungrier than I am.

Jeremiah’s example is inspiring. He feeds on God’s Word. He wants its truth and life in him. It is his joy. It is his delight. And if we didn’t look more closely, we could assume that Jeremiah couldn’t relate to the apathy and spiritual dryness that we lesser mortals experience. But when we read Jeremiah’s story and the context of his statement of delighting in God’s Word, we make an interesting discovery. Jeremiah is in the midst of dark depression and anguished complaint. He is so discouraged, so disheartened, that he wishes he had never been born (Jeremiah 15:10). He lists all the ways he has suffered as a result of speaking God’s truth. Jeremiah 15:17-18 says,

“I did not sit in the company of revelers,

nor did I rejoice;

I sat alone, because your hand was upon me,

for you had filled me with indignation.

Why is my pain unceasing,

my wound incurable,

refusing to be healed?

Will you be to me like a deceitful brook,

like waters that fail?”

It turns out that Jeremiah’s spiritual life isn’t one mountaintop experience after another. Instead, he’s often discouraged and depressed. He’s tempted to question God’s goodness. At this low moment of his life, he is more aware of what he’s done for God than he is of what God had done for him.

This sounds terrible, but, honestly, it encourages me. It tells me that God’s Word meets us where we are. It meets us in the midst of doubt. It speaks to us in the midst of spiritual struggle. Maybe that’s where you are. The teaching of a college professor has you feeling like a fool for trusting in an “outdated, flawed book”. Or maybe you’re just tired. Reading the Bibles feels like an empty exercise.

God can meet you and me in these moments of life. The Bible isn’t just for people who feel strong. I’m grateful we don’t have to lead perfect lives to read God’s perfect Word. Jeremiah’s life teaches us this. Jeremiah suffered. He was discouraged. God’s Word isn’t just for the happy people of the world. We can find joy in God’s Word and the trustworthiness of His promises even when we lack joy in our hearts.

Sometimes we have to work to find delight in God’s Word. Jeremiah said that when he ate God’s words, they became joy. They don’t become a joy sitting on a shelf. We have to taste and receive them. The fact that this requires effort shouldn’t discourage us. As we grow in our knowledge of how trustworthy and powerful Scripture is, our love for it will increase… God understand our weakness, but He doesn’t make allowance for distrust and disbelief. He gave Jeremiah this wonderful promise: “I am with you to save you and deliver you” (Jeremiah 15:20). God saves. God delivers. It was true for Jeremiah. It was true for the people of Judah. It’s true for you and me. Dua Jenis Kebijaksanaan di Dunia Ini

Dari zaman persekolahan saya dahulu sehingga sekarang, satu fakta yang sangat mengagumkan bagi saya ialah: ilmu pengetahuan di dunia ini semakin lama semakin bertambah. Dengan adanya teknologi seperti internet kita dapat mengetahui pelbagai perkara dengan mudah dan senang. Melalui komputer kita dapat menghantar dan menerima maklumat dalam beberapa saat ke seluruh dunia. Banyak maklumat yang sudah dikumpul dan banyak fakta-fakta sudah ditemui pada abad ini yang jauh lebih mendahului abad-abad sebelumnya (Saya berfikir, jika Albert Einstein dilahirkan pada tahun 2000, mungkin idea-idea dia kita lihat sebagai biasa-biasa saja).

Namun begitu, peningkatkan ilmu pengetahuan tidak bererti kehidupan manusia menjadi semakin senang. Jauh daripada itu, rata-rata kehidupan kita sekarang menjadi semakin rumit dan penuh dengan masalah. Ilmu pengetahuan yang banyak ini tidak dapat menyelesaikan masalah asas yang dialami manusia seperti masalah hubungan sesama kita; rusuhan perkauman, peperangan, kemiskinan, pergolakkan politik dan kepimpinan, alam sekitar dan sebagainya. Kenapa ini berlaku? Kenapa dengan banyaknya ilmu pengetahuan yang kita ada sekarang tidak dapat menyelesaikan masalah-masalah yang asas ini?

Kita memerlukan kebijaksanaan. Ilmu pengetahuan tanpa kebijaksanaan tidak berguna; dan kebijaksanaan tanpa Tuhan Allah adalah kebijaksanaan dunia. Mazmur 111:10 ada tertulis, “Barangsiapa ingin menjadi bijaksana harus menghormati TUHAN” (BIS). Segala masalah yang belaku kepada manusia keseluruhannya adalah kerana kita menggunakan “kebijaksanaan dunia” untuk melakukan sesuatu perkara dan bukannya dengan menggunakan “kebijaksanaan yang datang dari Allah”. Kita tidak memiliki kebijaksanaan kerana kita tidak menghormati Tuhan seadanya. Kita tidak menghormati-Nya dengan tidak melakukan apa yang di perintahkan-Nya. Brother Peter Paris pernah berkata kepada saya, “Kebijaksanaan menurut Al-Kitab ialah ketaatan seseorang itu untuk melakukan apa yang diperintah oleh Allah melalui Firman-Nya. Jika kamu tahu banyak perkara tentang Al-Kitab tetapi tidak melakukannya – kamu ialah seorang yang bodoh!” Dan “kebodohan” inilah yang menyebabkan ramai orang termasuk orang Kristian dibelenggu dengan masalah hubungan sesama kita.

Al-Kitab mengatakan bahawa ada 2 jenis kebijaksanaan di dunia ini. Pertama ialah “Kebijaksanaan yang datang dari Allah”. Ia ialah pemberian Tuhan kepada orang yang mengenal-Nya. Mereka akan memiliki “fikiran Kristus” (1 Korintus 2:16) dan berfikir mengikut kehendak Allah dan melihat sesuatu perkara melalui sudut pandangan Kerajaan Allah. Menurut Firman-Nya, “orang yang mempunyai kebijaksanaan yang datang dari syurga, pertama sekali murni, suka akan kedamaian, lemah lembut, dan ramah tamah. Mereka berbelas kasihan dan mengamalkan segala macam perbuatan baik” (Yakobus 3:17).

Yang kedua ialah “kebijasanaan dunia” yang datang dari sudut pandangan yang mementingkan diri sendiri, individualistik, ingin melakukan apa saja demi untuk mencapai kehendak hati dan tidak mahu (atau tidak) langsung melihat kebenaran Tuhan dalam apa sahaja perkara yang dilakukan. Tentang kebijaksanaan ini ,Tuhan berkata, “Aku akan memusnahkan[nya]” (1 Korintus 1:19).

Kawan-kawan, mana satu kebijaksanaan yang ingin kamu pilih?
“Kebijaksanaan yang datang dari Allah” atau ‘Kebijaksanaan Dunia”?
Berdoalah dan minta kebijaksanaan daripada-Nya.
Jadilah pelaku Firman-Nya, maka kamu akan beroleh kebijaksanaan itu. Amen.

God-ward Thinking VS. Positive Thinking (& some words for Christian leaders)

“Positive thinking” is not the Gospel. It’s not even Biblical. Now don’t get me wrong, I do believe in “positive thinking” and based on my experiences and common sense; positive thinking is beneficial. It is good in itself. Plus, it improves our health and brightens our day when everything around us seems to make us fall apart. It is good in itself, neither bad nor good – neutrally alright like drug and wine (but slightly good than bad).

Why I equate “positive thinking” with drug and wine? Well, as we all know, excessive drug and drunkenness is bad, or more accurately in Biblical term – it is sin. Those who are too absorb, fanatic with “positive thinking” (or whatever kind of thinking except one) will eventually believe and have faith in other thing or with oneself rather than in the Lord Jesus, the Master and the King over our body, mind and soul. This is offensive statements to write, but as Christ followers who have surrendered joyfully everything of us to Him shouldn’t ignore this warning lightly.

Why I say excessive, too absorb, fanatic “positive thinking” is a sin? Well, “positive thinking” doesn’t deal with human sinfulness; it diverts the attention to some other things and thus, no personal responsibilities and repentance requires. It doesn’t solve the problem. Only avoid it. Any “negative thinking” will be labeled as bad for our self-esteem, destroy our self-image and comes from the Devil – but that are not entirely true. God may speak to us through “negative” thinking, events and circumstances in our lives. When we commit sin, the Holy Spirit may touch our heart so that we’ll feel guilty and at the same time convince us to repent from our sin. When we cheating on someone, when we hate someone, when we tells lies to someone – we ought to feel bad about it and that require us to have “negative thinking” in our own self-righteous thinking.

Furthermore, the faith of “positive thinking” is in the things positive but not exclusively to God. It may include God as its object (initially) but not the only one. “Positive thinking” is like polytheism religious, ‘belief in or worship of more than one god’ because the centers of its faith are in anything, whatever positive. What I concern about this kind of (excessive) thinking is that ‘Christians’ may unconsciously but genuinely believe and have their center of faith in themselves. Deceived in their thinking, they thought that ‘God’ is the center of their faith, but further from the truth – it is in ‘themselves’. This is idolatry. Therefore, it is sinful.

The Bible doesn’t teach “positive thinking”; God’s Word teaches “God-ward thinking”. It is not void and abstract faith; it is clear and single – true faith in God of the Bible. Anything “positive” is not necessary right. And if it seems right for us, it may not right in God's sight. The standard measurement of rights and wrongs for Christ followers is according to the Bible. No matter how “positive” our thinking about certain things or events maybe, if it doesn’t match with Biblical principles, it is still wrong and against the will of God.

 “God-ward thinking” doesn’t subtract the “negative” but include it in our thinking and examine the “negative” in the light of the Scriptures. We ought to see problems or circumstances as it is. It sees all things wholistically – inside out – the “positive” and “negative” part together. Then we ask questions: what, when, where, why, who and how. And relates all these thoughts to God, asks God to examine our feelings, bring it all in our prayer to God, asks God for strengths and faith. This process of “God-ward thinking” might hurt us, confront our pride, and may tear down our self-esteem for a moment. But compare all these in a long-term perspectives (or better, in eternal perspective), you’ll be glad and rejoice that you obey God’s prompting Spirit to think “God-ward thinking”.

This is God’s gracious blessing for His children.

So preachers & pastors, full-time workers & Church leaders, Bible study instructors & Sunday school teachers, Christian book writers & singers, think “God-ward thinking” in your words and actions. Don’t fall for something less (“positive thinking”) than something greatly awesome (“God-ward thinking”). Let the secular teachers and motivational speakers do that for others. They have done a great job doing it and we must not imitate them, even in the name of winning others for Christ. If we want to win other for Christ, rely on God’s Holy Spirit and win them by the power of God – not by the power of positive thinking. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t think positive and stop being optimist, but rather let us talks and preaches what is utmost important, what is essentially needed today, namely, to think “God-ward thinking”. Apart from this, we have no other businesses.

Kenapa Hidup ini sangat Rumit?

Saya ingin memulakan satu perjalanan ke sebuah Kerajaan Syurga yang penuh dengan harapan, berkat dan kemuliaan. Kerajaan yang Tuhan Allah telah janjikan kepadaku. Tempat yang indah dan sempurna.

Semua yang saya perlukan untuk perjalanan ini telah Allah sediakan kepadaku. Seperti Dia menjaga burung-burung di langit, seperti itu juga Dia menjagaku.

Saya tahu perjalanan saya akan mengambil masa yang agak lama, dan penuh dengan cabaran-cabaran yang akan datang. Tetapi “Puji Tuhan!”, saya berfikir sendiri di dalam hati, “pasti ada jalan mudah untuk perjalanan ini” Saya senyup. “Halleluyah”, saya bersuka, “Tuhan memang baik”.

Namun selepas sekian lama, perjalanan menuju ke Kerajaan-Nya menjadi semakin sukar. Sukacitaku sekarang berubah menjadi kewajiban. Kewajiban pula bertumbuh menjadi berhutang budi. Nyanyian puji-pujian saya semakin lama semakin tidak kedengaran. Saya menangis dengan penuh dukacita. Saya sekarang seakan-akan dirantai oleh semua kewajiban di dunia ini... Saya berfikir, “Ini pasti akan berlalu, ia mesti berlalu...” Saya terus menangis.

Ada orangkah yang lebih bodoh seperti saya, yang telah menjual kebebasan di dalam Kristus dengan rantai kewajiban dan tanggungjawab di dunia yang terlampau dan mendengar dusta-dusta di sekelilingku?

Saya begitu tekun untuk mencapai Kerajaan itu, tetapi tarikan dunia yang begitu hebat telah melambatkan saya... malah telah menarik saya balik ke tempat asal – dimana saya pernah berada dulu.

Tuhan Yesus, aku mahu kembali kepadaMu. Aku berdoa.

Sekarang...

Yesus mendengar seruanku.

Dia berpegang kepada janji-Nya.

Dia telah menyelamatkanku.

“Janganlah berusaha untuk mendapat makanan yang boleh menjadi basi, tetapi berusahalah untuk mendapat makanan yang boleh memberikan hidup sejati dan kekal. Itulah makanan yang akan diberikan oleh Anak Manusia kepada kamu, kerana Dia sudah dilantik oleh Allah Bapa" (Yohanes 6:27)

Part 3: The Bible - Its Inspiration (ii)

What does it mean by “Inspiration”?

The English word Inspiration comes from the Latin inspirare, which means “to breathe in”. When we say that the Bible is ‘inspired’ we mean that God spoke His message through the people whom He chose. These people did not become like robots under God’s control, but kept their own identities, while being guided by God.

John A. Beck author of Understand Your Bible wrote, “The writing process that resulted in the Bible was both informed and directed by the Holy Spirit. In the end God communicated precisely what He intended to say, yet in ways that reflected the unique experiences, knowledge, perceptions, and writing styles of the human authors. God spoke through these writings, yet without abolishing the uniqueness of their human contribution.”

To briefly study on the inspiration of the Bible, lets us examine some important points:

The Identity of Its Divine Author

The Bible claims that God is its ultimate author. The conviction that God was speaking through the messages of the Old Testament is expressed many hundreds of times. For example, God said to prophet Jeremiah, “Behold, I have put my words in your mouth” (1:9).

Both the Jewish people and the New Testament writers accepted that the Old Testament was inspired by God. Jesus Himself upheld this view. He believed the Scriptures, and by the way He quoted them showed that they were more important than human opinions and traditions (remember how He quoted the Scripture when He was tempted by the Devil and when the Scribes and the Pharisees wanted to trap Him with their tradition’s laws?) The New Testament writers, for their part, were also aware that they were not teaching human wisdom, but rather God’s message to men. “All Scripture is breathed out by God” (2 Timothy 3:16); “…spoke from God… carried along by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21).

The Diversity of Its Human Writers

The Biblical writers came from many different cultures and eras and represented a very wide range of intellects and abilities. There was a diversity of circumstance. Some wrote as prisoners in exile, while others ruled kingdoms. There was a diversity of employment. Some were ordinary bakers, shepherds or tent-makers, while others enjoyed high positions in society. There was a diversity of character – from the despairing to the joyful. John A. Beck also noted,

“The writer of the Bible also came from a variety of backgrounds. Some were leaders, such as Moses and Samuel; or prophets, such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Obadiah. But also among the recognized writers we find kings, such as David and Solomon; a physician, Luke; a Roman tax collector, Matthew; fishermen, such as Peter and John; and Amos, who identifies himself as both a shepherd and a fig farmer (see Amos 7:14)”.

The Unity of Its Many Themes

This unique library of books confronts the reader with its unity, although written over some 1,500 years. It is ancient, yet modern in its relevance to human needs. It is diverse, yet held together by its common theme of God’s people and their desire and need of a coming Savior. [Jesus, for example, told two of his disciples on the road to Emmaus that from the “beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself” (Luke 24:27)]. And what really amaze me until now is that; even though most of them never met one another, they told the same one Story of Redemption by God! The Old Testament finds its fulfillment in the New Testament. The New Testament has its root in the Old Testament. The library is one. The Story – His Story – is one.

The Authority of Its Inspired Truth

From early times the value of these books so impressed themselves on God’s people that they acknowledged their authority and received them into the category of inspired Scripture. They recognized that it was God who was speaking. It was not the act of binding the books into the Bible that gave them their inspiration. This they already possessed. The authority of the Old Testament was recognized by the Jews, by Jesus Himself and also by the New Testament writers, who frequently quoted the Old Testament. The New Testament writings were also accepted by the church from its early days as having the final say in everything that Christians believe and do.

The Reality of Its Moral Impact

The Bible is not afraid to portray evil honestly, even when some of its finest characters are involved in it (for example, David). But in contrast, it also shows us the highest moral standard in history – the life of Jesus Christ. This is the book that consistently challenges evil, transforms lives and exalts Christ. I like what the old saying puts it: “Many books can inform, but only the Bible can transform”. Perfectly right!

My Conclusion about the Bible “Its Inspiration”

The Bible is the only book that can last for eternity. Someone asked me, “Richard, what happen if one day the Bible is totally vanish from the world?” “I don’t know how to answer that… I can’t imagine that thought,” I replied. “Why?” “Because the Bible will never vanish away, it will survive for eternity. It is God’s Word. The existence of the Bible is forever as our God is forever, always – never end.” I believe this.

It is said that Voltaire spoke of the Bible as a short-lived book. He arrogantly said that within a hundred years it would pass from common use. Is it true? Well, the truth is, not many people read or know Voltaire today, but his house has been packed with Bible as a depot of a Bible society. It will endure forever because it is God’s Word – He inspired it!

Iman dan Perbuatan

“Jika iman tidak dinyatakan dengan perbuatan, iman itu sia-sia!” (Yakobus 2:17)

Sejak dahulu lagi, jika kamu membaca sejarah gereja, ramai orang selalu berdebat mengenai doktrin tentang iman dan perbuatan. Yang mana satu harus didahulukan? Yang mana satu yang lebih berkenan di hadapan Tuhan Allah?  Jawapannya: kedua-duanya sangat penting bagi Tuhan.

Yesus Kristus tidak pernah membiarkan kita untuk memilih diantara iman atau perbuatan. Firman Allah mengajar kita bahawa perbuatan tanpa iman tidak bermakna bagi Tuhan, kerana kita tidak mungkin boleh mendapat penyelamatan dari dosa melalui pekerjaan kita sendiri. Ramai orang yang berbangga dengan perbuatan baik mereka seringkali berbicara tentang bagaimana mereka selalu membayar hutang tepat pada masanya, tidak pernah menipu sesiapa, sangat setia kepada suami atau isteri mereka, selalu memberi sedekah kepada orang miskin dan sebagainya. Akan tetapi Tuhan Allah di dalam Firman-Nya menganggap kebenaran kita sendiri, perbuatan baik yang datang dari diri kita sendiri adalah kotor dan seperti najis (Yesaya 64:6). Tidak ada perbuatan baik di dunia ini yang mampu mencapai standard ‘baik’ Allah.

Namun begitu, apabila kita sudah diselamatkan oleh Tuhan Allah melalui iman kita kepada Yesus Kristus, Dia mahukan kita – malah memerintah kita – supaya bukan sahaja menjadi pendengar Firman-Nya, tetapi juga melakukan Firman-Nya (Yakobus 1:22). Perbuatan, apabila dilakukan melalui iman kita kepada Yesus, akan menjadi sesuatu perkara yang indah dan memuliakan nama-Nya. Perbuatan baik [bagi yang sudah mengenal Yesus] bukanlah sesuatu perkara yang hanya dilakukan begitu sahaja tanpa makna; ia berfungsi untuk membuktikan bahawa kasih Tuhan ada pada kita dan dengan perbuatan, orang lain boleh mengalami dan melihat kasih-Nya dengan nyata. Melalui perbuatan baik kita, orang lain akan mudah tertarik dengan iman kita kepada Yesus.

“Andaikan seorang saudara lelaki atau saudari perempuan memerlukan pakaian dan tidak mempunyai cukup makanan. Tidak ada gunanya kamu berkata kepada kepadanya, ‘Allah memberkati kamu! Pakailah baju panas dan makanlah dengan secukupnya!’ – jika kamu tidak memberikan keperluan sehari-hari kepadanya. Demikian jugalah dengan iman. Jika iman tidak dinyatakan dengan perbuatan, iman itu sia-sia!” (Yakobus 2:15-17).

Tidak cukup dengan kita hanya mengatakan bahawa “Allah mengasihi kamu”, ia juga harus disertakan dengan perbuatan yang menunjukkan kasih itu. Beginilah caranya orang lain dapat melihat kasih Yesus di dalam hati kita. Begini juga orang lain dapat merasakan dan mengerti betapa besarnya kasih Bapa apabila Dia menghantar Anak-Nya ke dunia untuk mati bagi kita semua (Yohanes 3:16). Namun begitu, harus diingatkan bahawa ‘perbuatan’ tidak akan dapat menggantikan keperluan ‘iman’ dalam hal penyelamatan dan tidak boleh dijadikan alasan untuk kita tidak mahu ‘pemberitaan Berita Baik’ kepada semua orang – prasangka ini harus kita elak. Perbuatan tidak boleh dipisahkan dengan iman dan pemberitaan Berita Baik. Allah berFirman, “Jika iman tidak dinyatakan dengan perbuatan, iman itu sia-sia!”
