Jesus, Immanuel: God with Us

He could have given up. No one would have known otherwise. Jesus could have given up. One look at the womb could have discouraged Him. God is unbridled as the air and limitless as the sky. Would He reduce His world to the belly of a girl for nine months?

And nine months? There is another reason to quit. Heaven has no months. Heaven has no time. Or, perhaps better said, heaven has all the time. It’s we who are running out. Ours passes so quickly that we measure it by the second. Wouldn’t Christ rather stay on the other side of the ridge of time?...

And the stable. Is that not yet another reason for Christ to back out? Stables are smelly, dirty. Stables have no linoleum floors or oxygen tanks. How are they going to cut the umbilical cord? And who is going to cut the umbilical cord? Joseph? A small-time carpenter from a one-camel town? Is there not a better father for God? Someone with an education, a pedigree. Someone with a bit of clout? This fellow couldn’t even swing a room at the hotel. You think he’s got what it takes to be the father to the Master of the universe?...

Jesus could have given up. Imagine the change He had to make, the distance He had to travel. What would it be like to become flesh?

Love goes the distance… and Christ travelled from limitless eternity to be confined by time in order to become one of us. He didn’t have to. He could have given up. At any step along the way He could have called it quits… He didn’t, because He is love. And “love… endures all things” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). He endured the distance. What’s more, He endured the resistance. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory” (John 1:14).

Jesus Immanuel and Always Be with Us

Matthew, the writer, wanted to make sure his Jewish readers (who were his primary original audience) saw the connection between events in Jesus’ life and the prophesies about the Messiah in their Scriptures, our Old Testament. He writes, “All of this [Jesus’ birth] occurred to fulfil the Lord’s message through his prophet: ‘Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’’” (Matthew 1:22-23, NLT). The passage Matthew referred to came from the prophet Isaiah. While it likely had a short-term fulfilment, early Jewish scholars saw in passages like Isaiah 7:14 and 9:6 whispers from God about the promised Messiah.

Until the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the middle of the twentieth century, the accuracy of messianic prophecies were often chalked up to Christians editing the ancient texts and “writing in” references to Jesus. (Yes, Christian scholars were and are accused of editing the ancient texts even today. Why? Because the accuracy of Jesus fulfilling the ancient prophesies about the first coming of Messiah are staggeringly, miraculously accurate that it seems impossible for it to really happen. Unbelievable, it is. But it happened. Believe that the Hebrew Scriptures, the Bible to be the work of God or remain sceptic). A complete scroll of the Book of Isaiah dating to before the time of Jesus was part of the Qumran treasure trove, giving us documented evidence that prophecies about Jesus were on record long before he was born.

In Isaiah’s immediate context, the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14 was (and can be) referred to a contemporary fulfilment. But the ultimate fulfilment of the prophecy would occur when a virgin (Mary) would actually conceive and bear a son (Jesus) who would be “God with us” – Immanuel. Interestingly, the final verse in Matthew’s Gospel records Jesus saying, “I am with you always” (Matthew 28:10) – Jesus was not only born Immanuel, but he remains forever God with us among all peoples, to the end of the age.

Think about this: Because God foreknows, he can foretell. Because God is ultimately in control, what he foretells will come to be. These prophesies invite and test our trust in God. The accuracy of fulfilment that can be traced in Jesus’ life leaves us without excuse when it comes to trusting God’s plan for the world and his plan for our own lives. Question – In what ways are you trusting God today?

Jesus Called You to be a Missionary (A Reflection on Mark 6:6-13)

“[Then] Jesus went to the villages around there, teaching the people. He called the twelve disciples together and sent them out two by two. He gave them authority over the evil spirits and ordered them, ‘Don’t take anything with you on the trip except a walking stick – no bread, no beggar’s bag, no money in your pockets. Wear sandals, but don’t carry extra shirt’” (Mark 6:6-9, GNB).

Previously Jesus was rejected in his hometown Nazareth. Hurt, but not giving up. So, he and the disciples went to the villages nearby to tell people who want to receive the good news about the Kingdom of God and to “turn away from their sins” (Mark 6:12). What Jesus is doing here was exactly what he challenged them to be and to do “Come, follow me and I will make you fishers of men” (Mark 1:17). When he chooses the twelve he said, “I have chosen you to be with me. I will also send you out to preach, and you will have authority to drive out demons” (3:14-15).

Do you remember Jesus’ first invitation to you to be his disciple? Just like yesterday, today we are called to him, to equip by him, and then sent out as his representatives. Mission, mind you, is the calling of all God’s people, not just for the selected few. Wherever you are – at the church, workplace, shopping mall, up in the jungle, hospital, campus or home – you’re God’s representatives. To be a Christian is to be a missionary. I always tell my students that God is calling them to be missionaries at home and in their own campuses. One Christian teacher told me, “God sent me to be a missionary at school [he chuckled] and thanks to the government, they paid me to be here.”

Jesus, in his humanity, can’t do it alone. There are about half a dozen of villages around Nazareth, so he “sent them two by two.” Why? Because “two is better than one”? Yes, and more. Send out in pairs is important for mutual support and encouragement. Two also good for decision-making and reliable witnesses (as Deuteronomy 17:6). Sometime I feel sad when some of the churches send preachers or missionaries off their own. Many evangelists are solo operators too. Friend, don’t do it all alone. Christians must not be a one-man show. Soloist is not the pattern of discipleship. Collaborate with others, working together, partnership in the service of him. We have Jesus’ authority over the evil spirits – he is with us.  

Are you ready for mission? Let me helps you to understand how to apply Jesus’ instructions – today. Mark 6:8-9 simply means: We are to travel light, bring minimum provisions as we go, don’t over-do on preparations and don’t be fussy about where to stay or wear. Eugene Peterson paraphrase these verses this way, “Don’t think you need a lot of extra equipment for this. You are the equipment. No special appeals for funds. Keep it simple. And no luxury inns. Get a modest place and be content there until you leave” (The Message). Preparation is important, but not as important as the preparation of your heart and mind. “You are the equipment.” Remember, even if you’re seem to be alone, Jesus is with you. He is your eternal partner. So don’t be afraid.

Then Jesus said, “Wherever you are welcomed, stay in the same house until you leave that place. If you come to a town where people do not welcome you or will not listen to you, leave it and shake the dust off your feet. That will be a warning to them!” (Mark 6:10-11). This is a heavy stuff. Basically, Jesus is saying that if there are people who will welcome you, stay there. If not, go away. Don’t make a scene. In doing mission and evangelism, we need to have the urgency. Urgency means we have to go (that is, we go not wait). Urgency also means “that there is no time to waste on those who are plainly not interested… who are totally unreceptive.” (quote from Crossway Bible Guides: Mark by David Hewitt). Unless God is specifically calling you to reach out to a certain area and people, you must stay. But generally for the unresponsive, please move on to other places and disassociate with them. “Shake the dust off your feet.” We have more places to go, we have to move on. This is a command, this is urgent!

Are you ready for mission?

There will be conflicts, rejections and persecution.

But don’t lose heart – Jesus be with you. Share the joy of Christ.

Go on, you have Jesus’ authority to teach, preach and heal. Amen.

Since the Bible says God cannot Die, yet Jesus Died, Does that not Prove that Jesus cannot be God?

“All honour and glory to God forever and ever!

He is the eternal King, the unseen one who never dies; he alone is God. Amen”

(1 Timothy 1:17, NLT)

It’s true that God is immortal, which is simply a way of saying that he cannot die. Verses like 1 Timothy 1:17 say this plainly. It’s equally clear that Jesus really died. That does not mean his existence ended. Rather it means his body and spirit were separated, just as ours are upon our death.

On this point, Philippians 2:6 says that before Jesus entered human history as a man, Christ had equality with God in every possible way. But he didn’t think that was something to hang on to. Instead he emptied himself of that equality in humanity to come “in the likeness of men.” Hebrews 2:17 says the same thing: “He had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.”

In conclusion, to identify with us and substitute himself for us, Jesus Christ humbled himself by becoming a human being to die like us so that we could have our sins forgiven. In this, Jesus remained God. Rather that refuting Jesus’ divinity, his death reveals to us the love of God.

Part 2: God - His Revelation (v)

Actually, this series is from Understanding Bible Truth booklets by Robert Hicks and Richard Bewes (1981), but I have expanded some texts for modern readers (to make it easier to read) and added Scripture quotes (I’m using ESV Bible) into these writings to clarify its points more clearly. My purpose of making this series available in the internet is single: So that you can be clear the essential facts about the Bible’s teaching in a readily understandable form.

First, What Does it mean by “Revelation”?

There are two basic hindrances in our relationship with God. Firstly, God is infinite and humankind is finite. Secondly, God is holy and human beings are sinful. Thus, we cannot (even if we want to) know and have fellowship with God unless He reveals Himself to us, that is, unless He manifests Himself to us first. Robert M. Solomon in his book, The Enduring Word: The Authority and Reliability of the Bible, writes, “Unless God take initiative, there would be no contact between God and humankind… God is keen to make Himself known – He is keen to reveal His thoughts and purposes. This process is called revelation – whereby God reveals Himself to humankind, either directly or indirectly.”

There are 2 basic classifications of revelation: special revelation and general revelation. Here we only discuss 6 modes of revelations. God reveals Himself…

Supremely in Jesus (Special Revelation)

Throughout history God has been communicating to mankind. In the Old Testament God sent messengers and prophets to speak His messages, but it is in Jesus Christ that His revelation is complete and perfect (Hebrews 1:1-4). This is why Jesus is called “the Word” (John 1:1-18). He is the fullest way in which God has revealed Himself to us. Jesus’ life, His teaching and His character portrayed God perfectly, for He was God living as a man. John 1:18 declares, “No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at Father’s side, he [Jesus] had made him known”.

Through the Bible (Special Revelation)

Through a unique collection of writings, brought together over a period of about 1,500 years, God has made clear His plan for mankind, using men whom He guided to convey His message. Apostle Peter testified, “No prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:20-21).

Some men were chosen to write selected history, others to communicate wisdom and worship, yet others to unfold the future, or to give instruction for belief and conduct. Each book has its individual way of showing us God, within the unity of the Bible. “What I say is perspired,” writes Walter C. Kaiser Jr. “what God says is inspired”.

Through Creation (General Revelation)

The universe communicates (in a more general way) its own message of the power and majesty of God to the human race. Paul writes, “What can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it [the creation] to them” (Romans 1:19, bracket mine).

Even those who have never read the Bible see the finger of God in the universe. Psalms 19:1 reveals, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”

In History (General Revelation)

God has revealed Himself in a powerful way through history. God’s plan is revealed in the rise and fall of great empires, Egyptian, Babylonian or Roman. Jewish history is seen in the Bible as the means by which the Messiah would finally come. Furthermore, it cannot be a coincidence that the beginning of the Christian faith took place at a historically stable time, when communications were excellent in the Roman Empire, and when there was one common language – Greek.
Isn’t that amazing?

In Man (General Revelation)

God also reveals Himself in the very way in which we are made up. Man is made in “the image of God” (Genesis 1:27), and this image, although distorted through deliberate rebellion because of the fall, is not obliterated. As a result, man’s nature can point to the work of the Creator (see Psalm 139:13-16).

Man’s complexity and creativity is a signpost of God’s revelation, as also is the power of his conscience, his instincts and his emotions. It is evident that man was made to enjoy relationships, and these very relationships show the character of the God who made us

[Note: The Trinity of Godhead is the foundation of Biblical relationship. For the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit loves one another in unity-relationship. This is the source of our longing for relationship].

Through Human Experience (General Revelation)

God continues to speak to us in the present. His voice is heard in many ways: through human friendship, through the arts and through our appreciation of all that is beautiful.

Christ’s followers are also given the Holy Spirit (this, I believe, is fall under the category of ‘Special Revelation’), who speaks both to individuals and churches, and who progressively transforms those who listen to Him. In these ways, God continues to reveal Himself to men in the present. “For through [Christ] we both have access in one Spirit to the Father” (Ephesians 2:18).

My Conclusion about “God’s Revelation”

There is a story about an old Christian gentleman who was known for his optimistic outlook was asked the secret of his triumphant attitude. He replied, “I’ve read the last book of the Bible, so I know how the story ends. I’m on the winning side”. Yes, through what God had revealed to us, especially through the living Word of God – we who put our trust in the living God through faith in Jesus Christ by God’s grace – are really in the winning side! But don’t be too happy just because of that Good News; be happy also, supremely that – God is the One who first initiates relationship to have fellowship with us.

Remember the message of Christmas? Jesus come to us and was called “Emmanuel”, God is with us. Amazing!

It Will be Happy Christmas if You have God with You

“Look! The virgin will conceived a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us’” (Matthew 1:23NLT).

Prison Fellowship founder Charles Colson tells of a memorable experience he had while bringing Christmas presents to the children of prison inmates. Colson and his wife met a small boy who told them his name was Immanuel. When Colson opened his Bible to Matthew 1:23 and showed Immanuel that his name meant “God is with us”, the boy jumped up excitedly and said to his mother, “Mommy, God is with us! God is with us!”

I can imagine the scene very well. I could hear the boy shouted excitedly. My cousin’s son named Immanuel. He was born few days after Christmas. He is now a chubby and cute little boy (I already prepared him a present this year). He always shouts, “Uncle! Uncle!” Sometime I replied, sometime I ignored him. Irritate. But normally I replied, “Immanuel! Immanuel! Immanuel!” He smiled. I smiled. What a joyful reminder for both of us (or maybe it just me, for now) – that God is with us this Christmas.

‘Immanuel’ reminds me that God is not totally transcendent. He is not so far removed from the human race. If He, in the person of Jesus Christ, could actually live among us at one time as a real human person, it is not surprising that He can identify with us. He knows us in a human level though He is divine, of our pain and pleasure, sad and happy, grief and joy. He shows (not just say) that He really loves us and care for us. ‘Immanuel’ gives me confidence that God is for us not against us. And the fact that He came to die for our sin means we’re precious to Him and that by redeemed His people, us, back to Himself mean God desires to display His glory for us to enjoy forever – here on earth and fully in heaven. Friends, God is with us!

C.H. Spurgeon (1834 – 1892), one of my heroes of faith, exhorts us excitedly in his sermon The Birth of Christ:

“Now, a happy Christmas to you all, and it will be happy Christmas if you have God with you! I will say nothing, today, against festivities on this great birthday of Christ… Feast, Christians, feast! You have a right to feast. Go to the house of feasting tomorrow! Celebrate your Savior’s birth. Do not be ashamed to be glad – you have a right to be happy… Go your way, rejoice tomorrow, but in your feasting, think of the man in Bethlehem. Let Him have a place in your hearts, give Him the glory, think of a virgin who conceived Him. But think, most of all, of the man born, the child given! I finish by again saying, ‘A happy Christmas to you all!’”
