Lessons from Moral Failings of Christian Leaders (#LEGASItv Discussion S.2 E.1) with Bro Richard Angelus, Ps. Kelvin Felix and Ps. Ivan Ong

On 4th November 2020, Hillsong founding pastor Brian Houston sent an email to Hillsong East Coast informing them that Carl Lentz had been fired as the lead pastor of the New York City location. Houston cited “leadership issues and breaches of trust, plus a recent revelation of moral failures” as reasons for Lentz’s termination. In his Instagram post, Lentz admitted to being “unfaithful in my marriage, the most important relationship in my life.” This is not the first case nor the last one. It’s not so much about Carl but it’s about you and me too. We all have the potential and exposes to moral failure.

Jadi, dalam LEGASI.tv Discussion (S.2 E.1) ini, saya bersama dengan Ps. Ivan Ong and Ps. Selamat menonton! 😊⚡🔥 #ServeToLead #MoralFailure #MoreFaithful

Today, Ask for Wisdom

Fear of the LORD is the foundation of wisdom.
Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment” (Proverbs 9:10)

Give me an understanding hearts so that I can govern your people well
and know the difference between right and wrong” (1 Kings 3:9)

Solving a complex problem in trigonometry or writing a program in computer software both require great intelligence. But intelligence does not guarantee a balanced, productive, or fulfilling life. On the other hand, success in relationships, witnessing about your faith in Christ and reaching spiritual maturity depend more on wisdom than intelligence. That’s why you need to ask God for wisdom.

The Bible has so much to say about wisdom (in fact, the entire Book of Proverbs is devoted to it) because successfully navigating through life requires so much of it. Someone said wisdom helps you recognize that an all-powerful, all-knowing God has designed a moral universe in which there are consequences for your choices, either good or bad. Wisdom begins with understanding your accountability to your Creator and your full dependence on him. Thus, it is written: “Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline” (Proverbs 1:7).

It’s not what you know but who you know that’s matter most. Wisdom from God helps you develop a godly perspective that penetrates the deceptive and distorted messages of this world, particular in this generation. Wisdom is choosing to apply God’s truth and principles to your daily relationships and situations. It helps you know the difference between good and bad, right and wrong. Therefore, you need wisdom for this right motive and reason. “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking” (James 1:5).

Every Little Things We Do Shows Who We Are

Little things – the tone of your voice, the body language, and the words you use as you write or speak in everyday life – communicate volumes about you: your thoughts and the intentions of your heart. If you always talk nonsense and rubbishy on Facebook for example, (sometimes, can be excuse) then it shows the low quality of your mind and morality. If you post uplifting and thoughtful notes, inspirational quotes, and even somewhat honest-with-self-control comments, it shows the genuineness of your faith and signs of maturity. Every little things we do shows who we are.

Let me give another example. Do little things, like a slight change in our facial expression, really matter? Humans don’t suddenly hide their face like turtle or change colours like chameleons. Our true reactions are seen in more obvious expressions, tone of voice and body language. I read this amazing finding: We can recognise someone’s facial expression in less than 1/6 of a second. What’s more, we can process expressions from as far as 90 meters away. Amazing!

How can we do this? We pay attention. We are attuned to facial expressions as indicator of what someone is thinking. Because we (at least I do) think facial expressions are important, we pay attention to them. Because we pay attention to facial expressions, we react to them. Because we react, facial expressions become important to our communication. When my girlfriend asked me if I like to join her for Zumba session once in a while, my reply was “Maybe next time” I know that was she paying attention not only to what I say but also to other messages I was communicating. She know that I was saying “No” in a very polite way.

These little things that you do – what kind of books are you reading, what kind of friends you always hang out with, what kind of language are you using to communicate with others, how do you witness (or not witness) Christ to the world, how you say ‘I love you’ to your love ones, how you treat patients in the hospital or strangers when they enter the church – communicate volume about you. Truly, little things have big meanings. Little things in life do shows who we really are.

Take note of the little things you do. Does it really matter? Oh yeah, the Scripture says, “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31) and “Whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus” (Colossians 3:17). For God, every little things His children is doing or saying or thinking does matter!

God is No Fool

God in the Old and New Testament are the same - Only make clearer in Christ, my Lord.
The Old Testament teaches that obedience to the Ten Commandments will give us favor with God, but Jesus taught (not contrary) it isn't so much what we do that makes us acceptable to God. It is rather what we believe, for in the end, what we believe determines what we do. Good morality will not necessarily lead us to faith, but faith will always lead us to good morality. What we believes matter! Poet below is a good summary of this truth:

God is No Fool
By Lois A. Cheney

They say that God has infinite patience,
And that is a great comfort.

They say God is always there,
And that is a deep satisfaction.

They say that God will always take you back,
And I get lazy in that certitude.

They say that God never gives up,
And I count on that.

They say you can go away for years and years,
And he’ll be there, waiting, when you come back.

They say you can make mistake after mistake,
And God will always forgive and forget.

They say lots of things,
These people who never read the Old Testament.

There comes a time,
A definite, for sure time,
When God turns around.

I don’t believe God shed his skin,
When Christ brought in the New Testament,
Christ showed us a new side of God,
And it is truly wonderful.

But he didn't change God.
God remain forever and ever
And that God
Is
No
Fool.
